2007/2008 Season
A much more successful campaign under new skipper Colin Todd, who took over from the retired Paul Harding, eventually saw another promotion via the back door. The team more used to the new pitch and the pacy Back Division were now embracing the wider spaces, but not sure about the front row!!! A draw to Clee Hill RFC and a thrashing of Tenbury RFC in pre-season was followed by a couple of narrow defeats and then the first couple of league encounters went narrowly against the club. However, the new skipper was starting to make his own mark and this doom was gradually turned around, the results started to flow, and the team moved up the table to finish a creditable third place. Hopes abounded that next season we could win the division and gain promotion in our own right!!! Wrong!!! Second placed team Bloxwich RFC were disqualified for violent conduct and Cleobury were pushed up to Runners Up and promotion for the following season. A much younger and enthusiastic team was emerging, and their determination and skills managed to secure an appearance in the Final of the North Midlands Shield, but a narrow defeat by Ross on Wye meant that it was to be a second final defeat for the club.
The 2nd XV had much more prolific season by playing 19-games under Anthony ‘Willie’ Griffiths and a stream of new players were involved. Scorers included Allan Shields (212-points with 12-tries, 43-conversions & 22-penalties) was the principal contributor as John Hulland (12-tries), Ian King (10-tries), Josh Phillips (9-tries), Nick Lewis (8-tries) and Reuben Weavers (8-tries), all stepped up to the mark. In the 2nd XV Alex Brazier (72-points) was the main kicker as potential new star Ollie Smith (10-tries) managed to make his mark.
Led by Captain Laura Rome and Coach Hilton Smith the Ladies section entered the Midlands League for the first time and had an excellent start winning five of their first 6-games with high scoring entertaining Rugby, supported by a large crowd. However, with a small squad, on occasions over enthusiasm getting the better of their mind, they managed to sustain a few bruised and battered bodies to key players. So that after Christmas had to play some games short of numbers and only won one for the final 4-games. The record of 6-victories in a 12-match season gave them a creditable 3rd place finish in their first foray in to league games, something they could build on for the following season, but must attract more players. Top scorer was undoubtedly Becky Evans (65-points with13-tries) and Kirstie McGowan (42-points with 6-tries & 6-conversions).
At the end of the season long serving Chair Roy Powell decided, due to other commitments and a need for a new direction, took the difficult decision to stand down. The influence on the Club of such a stalwart of the town can never be underestimated, as former PE Teacher at the school, instrumental in the successful bid for Sports College Status in 2001 and going on to be Director of Sport. Roy was the driving force behind the ‘Sport 2000’ project and a focal point for most sporting matters and anything related to Rugby. He led the club during all the years, but especially the ‘Twickenham’ season with dignity, distinction and honour. The club would like to have wished Roy a happy and deserved retirement, but still an Honorary Vice President he continues to watch the odd game!!! He has since thrown his drive and enthusiasm into other projects round the town and we would like to wish him well. So how does the club find a replacement for such an iconic figure and who could even match the success and come up to that sort of level of leadership – well they decided to ask Dave Hinves to do the job instead. On acceptance Dave said that if managed half of the success Roy had, he would be satisfied and grateful – we shall see!!!!!
