Alex White gave a really honest assessment of what he called a really bad week last week and admitted the Seasiders need to bounce back very quickly.
He said “I’ve got zero complaints about the results against Ashton & Backwell and Falmouth last week. The Ashton & Backwell game was like a nightmare evolving in front of your eyes. I sensed quite early in the game that we weren’t quite at it and didn’t have the right mentality. All right they made it really difficult for us and they were the better side, had better quality, better runners. However, in contrast we were shy, nervous and played within ourselves. We never managed the game, and that was hard to take because it is not like us at all, and I thought we had moved away from being like that. However, the game showed the soft underbelly was still there.”
“They were deserved winners because we had no control of the game – it was end to end and they had more legs than us and the game became like a game of basketball which we didn’t want it to be. Having said that the only positive we could take was that the mistakes we made were honest mistakes which you can take and deal with. However, in the end the manner of the defeat was tough to take, conceding so late on and I think that probably knocked our confidence a bit for the Falmouth game.”
“So on to Falmouth and again I’ll say straightaway I have no complaints about that result either. However, it was a completely different performance from Ashton & Backwell and to be totally honest we crumbled. We started well, but as soon as we conceded we pressed self-destruct, again didn’t manage the game well from then on, and as a result we were punished by a decent side who on the day fully deserved the win.”
“Sadly, we showed no mental toughness - we were too soft and weak and, at times we played like kids, and it affected us massively. Whether the defeat on Wednesday took a lot out us I don’t know but, whatever, sometimes a few home truths need to be said in order to move you on and they were. The second half was better but by then the damage was done. Falmouth did what they needed to do first half and it’s easy to play when you’re 4-0 down and the opposition have taken their foot off the gas. So, we can take no pride from the second half performance but looking for positives we kept a clean sheet and Luca Smith in goal had a decent second 45 and we didn’t make things any worse.”
“I was also pleased with Ethan Feltham’s performance today. He plays on the edge and when he controls it like today, he’s at his best. He was getting a bit of stick from the Falmouth supporters, which was fun because you know then he’s doing all right and I thought he deserved a goal. He always plays with his heart on his sleeve, but there weren’t enough doing that.”
“Both Luca Smith and Ethan Feltham did the club credit today and the substitutes all did well and made a difference. I said to them at half time that they should take the chance to go out and express themselves and not be associated with the first half display. In a way they were playing for themselves. Tom Kemble, Sol Kent, Henry Westlake and Fin Biggs all did well and improved the team. That’s a big positive and will make picking the team for Cirencester interesting!”
“Now there are a lot of lessons that need to be learnt very quickly. We need to be mentally stronger and need to see a really big reaction this week. Cirencester away in the FA Cup is a free hit and as good a bounce-back game as you could get. There’s no pressure on us but as I’ve said we’ve got to learn quickly. We can’t afford to give ourselves too much to do in games and in the league, like we did last season, because the league will catch up with you very quickly if you don’t keep up with it. It’s easy when you’re winning so it’s times like these when you see what you’re made of and how quickly you can bounce back and that’s what we are looking to do at Cirencester on Saturday.”
