Everyone at Clevedon Town are sad to learn of the death last week of former favourite Dave Singleton at the age of 65.

Dave was 36 by the time he signed for the Seasiders in the summer of 1993 as they embarked on their first season in the Southern League after 415 appearances for Bath City in the Conference. Far winding down his career Dave was immediately named as club captain by manager Steve Fey and proved to be a very influential figure leading them to a fifth-place finish in their first season at the higher level in 1993/94 and then using his experience and personality to establish the club at Southern League level in a total of 162 plus 4 substitute appearances.

Originally a striker he scored 40 times for the Seasiders, including their first hat trick in the Southern League in a 3-1 win at Bedworth on 5th March 1994, adding 2 more hat tricks against Tonbridge Angels and Poole Town. But Dave had much more to his game than that and became known as ‘Mr Versatile’ at Clevedon, where he played in every position on the pitch, including in goal.

Dave had also played for Taunton Town and moved to Weymouth for £6,000 in December 1980 before signing for Bath City in 1981. He finally hung up his boots at Clevedon at the end of the 1996/97 season at the age of 40, some 735 appearances and nearly 200 goals.

Dave will be fondly remembered at Clevedon by the club and the many players he played with.
