Match Report by Paul Davis

The Playoff final proved a match too far the Seasiders and having gifted Falmouth a costly second minute opener Clevedon failed to find a way past the rock that was Tom Annear and James Ward at the heart of the home side’s defence.

With the early lead and the vociferous home crowd behind them, the home side were never under any pressure despite Clevedon producing their usual battling display which also restricted Falmouth’s chances to the two they took.

Clevedon made exactly the start they didn’t want when left back Bradley Leivers had time to send Oscar Massey racing down the left and plant the ball past James Dunn. Clevedon tried to recover things immediately and Brad Probert put Sam Beresford away to win a corner which was cleared, and Syd Camper headed over from Kieran Ireland’s cross back in.

Falmouth seemed content to sit on their lead, but Glen Hayer had to clear a corner from the right over the bar for another corner which Dunn punched clear. A Clevedon break on 13 minutes saw the ball fall for Joe Teall but his mishit shot went wide and four minutes later Kieran Ireland found a way round the back on the left edge of the of the box for a cross which Falmouth keeper Morgan Coxhead gathered.

Clevedon thought they should have had a penalty on 21 minutes when Coxhead collided with Sam Beresford from a through ball, but play was allowed to continue, and Elliot Nicholson was penalised for handball.

A good move involving Probert, Henry Westlake, Beresford, and Harlee Vozza brought only a throw-in, and when Camper’s long throw into the box was headed straight up in the air Teall picked out Hayer whose shot went straight to Coxhead.

The final action of the half saw a Falmouth free-kick on the edge of the box go straight through to Dunn and the teams turned round with Falmouth winning 1-0.

The second half started slowly but Dunn was out bravely to save at the feet of Luke Barner on the hour. Clevedon started to make changes, but Massey shot over from a good position and was then well blocked by Hayer. But on 70 minutes Falmouth grabbed a second with another simple goal when substitute Rubin Wilson won the ball on the left to find Barner in the box who had time to shoot past Dunn.

Again, Clevedon tried to respond straightway and a clever dribble into the box by substitute Freddie King only produced a throw-in. At the other end a powerful shot cannoned off Sol Kent’s head, but Hayer’s ball then found King who caused some concern with another mazy dribble into the Falmouth box. King’s final shot came back off a defender to Kent whose follow-up was also blocked. From the corner Hayer’s shot was blocked by James Ward.

Deep into added time the final throw of the dice for Clevedon saw King cut into the six yard box only for his cross to be headed away for a corner which came to nothing, and Falmouth were able to start their celebrations following their 2-0 win.

In the final analysis Falmouth were probably the better side over the season and to win, Clevedon needed to play as well as they did in the semi-final win at Bridgwater. Whatever they have enjoyed an unexpectedly successful season in all other respects and can look forward with confidence to going one better next season.

Seasiders Player of the Match: Syd Camper who put in a real captain’s shift.
