Match Report by Paul Davis

After the disappointing midweek defeat at Portishead, the Seasiders needed to bounce back quickly, and they did that with a comfortable 4-0 win against a Wellington side playing their first game in five weeks, which featured three penalties all awarded to Clevedon.

The first of those came as early as the 13th minute after Clevedon playing down the slope had dominated the early exchanges. From the restart after a short break to clear some dog mess, Joe Teall played the ball into the Wellington box and Alex Camm was charged in the back as he took the ball down. Camm got up to strike the penalty low to Jack McAndrews right past the keeper’s despairing dive and into the corner of the net.

Clevedon continued to dominate play and went close again on 28 minutes when Henry Westlake picked out Lucas Vowles in the box to cross and Camm close in got to the ball ahead of Jordan Hayman and flick it against the base of the post before it was cleared and with Hayman needing treatment.

Clevedon and Camm didn’t have to wait long to increase the lead though and it came from the second penalty of the game on 34 minutes. Freddie King’s free-kick from wide on the right saw Glen Hayer fouled by Hayman as the two players challenged for a header close in and the referee again pointed to the spot. This time Camm sent McAndrews the wrong way with another perfectly struck spot kick into the bottom corner.

Clevedon continued to push forward with the big Wellington defence working hard to get blocks in, so at half time it remained Wellington 0 Clevedon Town 2.

The third penalty came only three minutes into the second half with Clevedon quickly out of the blocks again and Westlake played a great ball through to Freddie King in the box only to be felled by keeper McAndrews as he prepared to shoot.

Again, Camm stepped up to take the spot kick for what would be a unique Seasider’s hat-trick of penalties in a game, but this time McAndrews came out on top in the battle of wits. Camm went to the keeper’s right again, but his time the ball was at a comfortable height, and McAndrews was able to push it away and Town were unable to take advantage of the ensuing scramble.

Playing down the slope Wellington had more of the play but still it was Town who created the better chances. Two more great balls in by Westlake saw chances for Vowles and Freddie King who also scuffed a shot straight to McAndrews after Syd Camper and Teall had combined well, but Dunn was forced to make two saves on the hour mark when Wellington threatened.

Clevedon finally made the game comfortable on 65 minutes when Callum Kingdon’s long ball was headed on by Vowles to Freddie King who sent Camm through into the box for a clever flick past the advancing McAndrews for his thirteenth goal of the season and to complete his hat-trick.

With both sides making substitutions, the game became more disrupted but there was more drama on 70 minutes when Sam Iles cleared a ball played into the Clevedon box but was fouled. In the aftermath, Sam Pashen was shown a straight red card and there was also a yellow card for the Wellington bench.

Clevedon hit the woodwork again on 75 minutes when Vowles was quickly on to a long ball forward, and although Harry Scott got there first, he under-hit his back pass to McAndrews, but the keeper recovered things with a good block and was relieved to see the ball come back off the post.

Soon normal service resumed though and substitute Harrison Coker down the left got round the back of the Wellington defence with only a corner resulting which came to nothing when Coker and Hayer went for the same ball at the far post. Hayer’s ball then put Elliot Nicholson through only to be stopped by Kieran Bailey.

Another good build-up down the left saw Freddie King’s final shot go wide and then a crossfield move saw Coker also miss the target. But deep into added time Clevedon finally rounded things off with a fine individual goal from substitute Harrison Kyte. Kyte left three defenders in his wake as he dribbled into the box to finish confidently for his tenth goal of the season and make the final score Wellington 0 Clevedon Town 4
