An explosive start saw the Seasiders two goals up after only 7 minutes and they went on to control the game with a committed 90 minutes from the whole squad, spearheaded by 2 goals apiece from the new strike partnership of Sam Beresford and Jacob Sloggett and the return of keeper James Dunn from injury.
The game was only 3 minutes old when Charlie Saunders flicked on Steve Kingdon’s lofted through-ball to Jacob Sloggett and Buckland keeper Andrew Sowden-Bird could only push Sloggett’s shot straight to Beresford to fire past two defenders and the prostrate keeper into the net.
Town doubled their lead in their next attack when Dave Thorne picked the ball up on the left to find Jacob Sloggett for a great pass which sent Beresford through to slot the ball past Sowden-Bird.
Buckland responded winning a series of corners which came to nothing. James Dunn’s smart dive prevented a James Simmonds’ cross providing any danger and then Simmonds sent Jack Baxter through, but keeper Dunn was out quickly to smother the shot, and the ball was cleared.
Clevedon started to reassert their authority and on 25 minutes another ball forward by Steve Kingdon was dummied by Beresford to set Jamie King through on a run only to shoot just wide. Sowden-Bird then flapped away a Sloggett corner, and the ball was cleared, but then the busy keeper was out quickly to deal with a Saunders flick-on from James Dunn’s long clearance.
After Rafael Beadman had shot wide from a Buckland break, just before half time James Wakefield’s attempt to repeat Ollie Babington’s goal on this ground three years ago from the halfway line was foiled by the retreating Sowden-Bird, so the score remained Bucks 0 Seasiders 2 at half time.
Clevedon could have made another spectacular start to the second half when straightway Saunders prodded a Sloggett cross just wide. At the other end Town continued to keep Buckland at bay helped by the fresh legs of substitutes Glen Hayer and Seb Scott but always looked likely to add to their lead.
Sowden-Bird could only push out another Clevedon corner but survived, until on 64 minutes the Seasiders struck again. Hayer started the move with a long ball forward, Haughton picked the ball up in midfield and sent Sloggett through down the left to go past Beadman and smash the ball into the net putting Town 3-0 ahead after 64 minutes.
Just like the first half Clevedon quickly added another when five minutes later Sloggett grabbed his second. Harry Haughton robbed Scott Pocock on halfway to pick out Sloggett on the left to go past two defenders and even though Myles James got back just as Sloggett was about to shoot, he was still able to prod the ball over Sowden-Bird and into the net to make it 0-4.
With the game won Clevedon’s next aim was to keep a clean sheet and although Buckland had more of the ball the Clevedon back line was rarely threatened. Baxter went close with an attempted chip over James Dunn which the keeper pushed away and saw the follow-up go wide and Callum Kingdon was then on hand to head away as Baxter threatened again.
Clevedon also had their chances in the last ten minutes. Substitute Tom Ovigne was twice close to adding to the lead, first just failing to get on the end of Scott’s ball into the area and then shooting wide after another Steve Kingdon long ball.
Beresford almost had his second hat-trick in successive games on 83 minutes after an exchange of passes with Ovigne but his shot was deflected just wide of the post for a corner which came to nothing and with the 0-4 final score Clevedon retained top spot in the Jewson Western League Premier Division with a thoroughly comprehensive performance.
