After Tuesday’s disappointing performance Clevedon needed a quick start to this game and they did just that with debutant Mateusz Trybull prominent down the left flank.

On 4 minutes the ball was played down the middle to Adam Buckley who took the ball forward and played it inside to Joe Ellis on the edge of the box. Joe was just about to let fly when an excellent sliding challenge by Gillingham skipper Nicholas Compton cleared the ball.

On 7 minutes Mateusz Trybull collected a pass inside his own half, set off down the left wing, beat 2 defenders before pulling the ball back to Ash Tandy whose shot was cleared off the line.

In the 13th minute a Mateusz Trybull corner from the right was cleared to Will Sneddon-Coombes and his 20 yard effort went wide.

Finally Clevedon made their possession count and took the lead in the 15th minute. Will Sneddon-Coombes received the ball and played a delicate chip over the Gillingham back-line to Adam Buckley who collected the ball and shot from an acute angle. Goalkeeper Sam Filkins got a touch but was unable to stop the ball rolling across the line for Clevedon’s first goal of the season, 1-0.

Gillingham started to get into the game and on 24 minutes a cross from the left was played into the box and Fraser McDiarmid beat Philip Ormrod to the ball and punched clear.

In the 27th minute a long ball through to Philip Ormrod saw him control the ball with his back to goal, turn and shoot wide.

Another long ball in the 31st minute saw Gillingham equalise. Matthew Morley collected the ball in space and with the Clevedon defence appealing in vain for offside he calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net, 1-1.

Gillingham gained confidence from the equaliser and the young Clevedon team started to tire as half-time approached. In the 45th minute a ball into the Clevedon box was only cleared to Elliott Bevis who took aim and placed his shot just inside the post to give Fraser McDiarmid no chance and make the score 1-2.

Clevedon made the worst possible start to the second half by conceding a third on 49 minutes. A speculative ball down the middle looked to be easily dealt with by Jake Buxton but he mistimed his header and the ball fell into the path of Matthew Morley. He took the ball round Fraser McDiarmid and despite Jake Buxton getting back to try and atone for his error, the ball deflected off Jake and ended up in the back of the net, 1-3.

On 55 minutes Will Sneddon-Coombes played the ball wide to Alex White on the right and his cross was collected by Sam Filkins under pressure from Adam Buckley.

On 74 minutes a cross from the right by Archie Ferris was met by substitute Alex Camm but his header went wide.

Clevedon continued to push forward and in the 79th minute the ball was played to Will Sneddon-Coombes who slipped the ball through to Ash Tandy in space and his shot from the corner of the six-yard box was held by Sam Filkins.

Gillingham sealed the win with their fourth in the 86th minute. The ball was played into the box for substitute Steve Smith to cross for Philip Ormrod to score and make the final score 1-4.
