Round 5 - over 65’s Hutton Moor Summer League .
An exciting finale to the end of our Summer Tournament ended today with some great football gaining us 2 wins and a draw which took us into second place behind the tournament winners Abbeymead .
Starting the day behind both Abbeymead and Weston Rebels , the target was to win all our 3 matches and hope that the other results went our way.
We got off to a great start with an excellent finish high into the net by Dicky Moore, after a good first touch, giving us a 1-0 win against Exeter , all of the team linking up well and Nigel Woods and Jon Fry managing to hit the post and crossbar 4 times between them, whilst giving the opposition very few opportunities to get back into the game .
This good form continued into the second game when we totally outplayed Weston Rebels with John Walter moving onto a well timed pass from Nigel Woods and finishing into the corner to give us the lead. Other than a bit of pressure just before half time which saw a couple of great saves by Chris Harvey , they offered very little and we continued to dominate the game in the second half and ran out comfortable winners 1-0.
Unfortunately the other results hadn’t gone our way by that point which meant that we knew that Abbeymead could not be caught by the time we kicked off the final match . Nevertheless we gave it everything in the hope that we could at least beat them once this season but despite all our efforts and numerous team changes we couldn’t quite manage that in a typical stop - start physical encounter. We stood up really well to this and we gave as good as we got with Mark Steadman outstanding at the back, marking their main striker and golden boot winner out of the game . Drew 0-0.
Myself and Angelo would like to thank the team today for their effort , commitment and support today, together with everyone who has represented the club during the tournament. If you have not been mentioned in dispatches, rest assured everyone’s efforts are appreciated .
Without doubt the team performances have improved this summer and we have managed to turn some draws into wins and conceded the fewest goals. (Our only losses have come at the hands of Abbeymead.)
We have plenty to look forward to this winter with players returning from injury ? and we will aim to go one better and challenge for the Winter title and beat Abbeymead !
Also many thanks to the supporters who turned up today , it was good to see you.
