'From Clifton All Whites to the Football league' 29/40 9 of 29

9. Tony Cuthbert

Date of Birth Dec 1953

Tony started his football on Tintagel Park, Clifton just up the road from the Catholic Church. He was with the All Whites from the early days. A useful defender who went on to play in the debut season for the club in the Midland League. On Sundays he also played Sunday afternoon football for the successful Nottingham Parks team.

When the club dropped out of the Midland League, he moved to Long Eaton United and later moved on to play for Ilkeston Town.

Cuthbert was promoted to player manager, working as a caretaker for the first ten games. Such was his impact that Town were unbeaten during this period and climbed to the top of the Northern Counties East League. As a result he was offered the job on a permanent basis. Although he was unable to maintain such stunning progress Ilkeston finished in seventh place, their best position for 13 years.

1988 saw him become secretary of Notts County Football Club, a position he held for 19 years until his retirement at the end of the 2016-17 season.
