CMB Sports Club was formed in the early 1970s to provide an opportunity for workers at Cunnard Metal Box, a factory producing metal cans for the food and drink industry, to participate in cricket and football. Over time the Club grew, offering organised sports, at a variety of ages, to the people of Bolton and its surrounding districts.
The demise of the factory, as a result of the decline in the manufacturing industry, resulted in the adult football team folding and in the late 1990s the Sports Club had to relocate from its home adjacent to the works on Chew Moor lane as the factory closed. Despite these years in the wilderness, CMB continued to field youth teams in various leagues across the region becoming known as CMB Nomads.
CMB Sports Club moved to its current home in the summer of 2000 with small sided and youth football being the focus. In 2007, an Open Age team was reintroduced at the club. Starting of life in Division two of the Lancashire Amateur League, the team achieved immediate success with promotion to Division One in its first season. Promotion to the Premier Division was achieved the following season with CMB remaining in the top flight for the next 3 years.
In 2012, demonstrating the Clubs commitment and ambition to improve standards, CMB successfully applied to join the West Lancashire Football League, a league at step 7 of the National Football pyramid. In 2015, as a result of the popularity of the Open Age Team and a growing membership the Club created a second adult team to play in the West Lancashire reserve league. Following the established pattern at CMB, the reserve side achieved promotion in year one along with reaching the league cup final.
Since joining the league CMB has won the Division Two league (2015-16) and been LFA Amateur Shield Finalists 2014-15.
