Ladies in Unlucky Loss
By Mark Coote
Unlucky loss to league leaders
This was a result which doesn’t tell the story.
The spirit of Coalville was there for all to see, fighting for every ball, working together to put pressure on AFC to make them look like a team that weren’t at the top of the league.
The first half, the girls played some good football, however didn’t get the shots off when needed. Some good build up play starting from the defence, through the midfield to the strikers was at times sublime. The ladies at times needed to take a touch to enable more control with the ball.
The defence were looking solid, dealing well with the AFC forwards, not allowing them time and space. The midfielders were busy making some crunching tackles and looking to get the ball forward quickly.
With Manuel Neuer in goal looking to come out at every opportunity, the defence recognised the need to cover and make goal bound clearances.
The only goal come from an AFC forward running onto a through ball. The keeper came out well, only for the ball to ricochet back against their forward to bounce in. Another time the ball could have gone anywhere.
From the start of the second half, Coalville were a team possessed. Absolutely dominating with no reward. At times the ball was forced forward and too straight for the AFC keeper to gather.
When the ladies played with composure, they looked dangerous with every attack.
The AFC keeper made 2 or 3 great saves when it looked like the equaliser was coming. AFC couldn’t deal with the pace of the Coalville forwards and wide midfielders. 1 v 1s were narrowly pulled wide when put through and the AFC defenders got an important foot on the ball when the trigger was pulled by Coalville to touch it away.
Recognising the defence was solid and playing brilliantly together gave the foundation to go all out for the points, the formation was changed to a 1-3-5-2 halfway through the second half.
A couple of moments at the back could have allowed AFC to score a second, however, everyone working for each other meant the defence were helped out when needed by the midfielders making recovery runs. The keeper also made a couple of good saves, most notably from an AFC free kick.
How did Coalville lose? The most one sided second half you will see without reward.
The ladies should be very proud of their performance today. The managers went away happy despite the result after seeing the ladies show what a great team they are.
Well done all
