Coedy go clear at the top after victory against The Bordermen

Adam Taylor17 Sep - 17:40

Coedpoeth United managed to get revenge following a 5-2 defeat a couple of weeks ago beating Saltney Town in their first league meeting of the season.

Aaron Camplin and Alex Whiting retuned to the starting line up in place of Aled Thomas and Mike Taylor, and Tom Lloyd was in contention again following a short spell out with injury and started on the bench. Iwan Bennet and Tomos Wiliiams started up top for the second game in a row, whilst Kieran Marks came in for Jack Massey, who was unavailable.

With the away side still hurting from back-to-back defeats, one of which against the hosts, the message from the management team was to start quick and control the game from the off. And the Coedy starting XI didn't dissapoint.

After just a couple of minutes, Coedpoeth were already peppering the Saltney keeper with shots. Williams passed to Callum Roberts with a tidy flick, Roberts pulled the pass to the edge of the box to find Bennet, whose strike rattled the crossbar and bounced to safety with the keeper well and truly beaten.

The balls into the box were causing Smith in the Saltney goal problems as the low autumn sunshine played havoc, meaning he took the decision to punch or parry any deliveries. United could sense a goal wasn't far away as they pushed to make their pressure count.

On 7 minutes, the breakthrough came. Camplin played a Trent-esque pass from the right side of the back three to put Roberts through behind the defense, leaving him the simple task of slotting his finish past the onrushing Smith, low into the bottom right corner. 0-1 Coedy.

The visitors kept pushing for another goal, and they didn't have to wait long for a second. Bennet whipped a teasing left footed cross into the box, which the keeper punched as far as Joe Colley on the 18 yard line. Colley controlled and sliced a volley into the top corner, making it 4 goals in 5 games for the midfielder.

United were on top, and The Boardermen were struggling to get the ball up the pitch, although the Town number 9, Alfie Harrington was doing his best to battle his way past the Coedpoeth defense when he could.

However, the away side were 3 goals to the good after just 24 minutes. Whiting won the ball and dribbled into midfield, finding Roberts on the right who beat his man with a deft flick, he got to the byline and tried to find Williams who was primed to poke the ball home, only for Hensel to slide the ball into his own net at the near post.

A superb opening half an hour from the away side would have been exactly what manager Jack Pawley was looking for, but the game was far from over as Coedy learnt the last time they visited The Dragon Steel Stadium as they led early in similar fashion, only to surrender a two goal lead and concede 5 without reply.

With this in the back of their minds, Coedpoeth pushed for another; Williams beat the backline with the goal at his mercy, but a fantastic recovering tackle from the Saltney centre back thwarted him at the last minute. Alex Whiting had a shot blocked from a corner shortly after and tried an audacious overhead kick off the rebound, but his acrobatic effort was blocked.

There was a warning with 10 minutes left in the half as Saltney hit the woodwork themselves from a long range free kick, with Wollett feeling it was heading over the bar.

Williams was again denied on the stroke of half time as he thumped a header from a Marks cross down into the ground, but the keeper got down to save and concede a corner. From the resulting set play, Will Evans found Cam Lewis who headed back across goal to his brother Olly, whose volley whistled past the far post and out for a goal kick.

With the first half drawing to a close, a long ball from Saltney drew shouts of offside from the United back line only for the referee to ignore and play on. The initial shot was saved by Wollett, but Tom Harrison was on hand to smash the rebound past the diving keeper to give the home side a glimmer of hope. 1-3 at half time.

The second half was stopped abruptly 5 minutes in as Camplin fell awkwardly on his right hand resulting in an unpleasant cracking sound and the centre back writhing in considerable pain on the floor. Credit to the Saltney bench who helped see to Aaron, who had to make way after several minutes down on the turf with a suspected break in his hand.

Coedpoeth struggled to find the cutting edge they had in the early stages of the game and failed to convert any of their chances. Olly Lewis had a header saved by the keeper, and Adam Lloyd was denied by a terrific challenge following a cut back from Cal Roberts.

Tomos Williams would have thought luck wasn't on his side on Saturday as he looked certain to score on 88 minutes. A git busting run from the half way line down the left side left the Saltney midfield in his wake, he opened up his body and curled a superb shot with his right foot that looked destined for the side netting, only for Smith to get the slightest of touches on it and force the ball round the post.

Saltney had very little in terms of a response, and Coedpoeth were largely untroubled for the second 45. They saw the game through and took the spoils resulting in them going a point clear at the top of the table.

FULL TIME: SALTNEY TOWN 1-3 COEDPOETH UNITED
MOTM: JOE COLLEY

The Gaffer, Jack Pawley, was delighted with the performance:

"I'm chuffed with the result, it was a proper team performance. We showed good energy and fitness levels to keep pushing for more goals and the football we played was a pleasure to watch at times. Hopefully, we can use this to start a good run and get some momentum going as we head into the game against Chirk next weekend and the games following.
