This was not the line-up. These are the signed players who were unavailable to the Manager for this league match against tough opponents, so it was inevitable that this would be a much-changed Colony team that started with three trialists called up for the game. To make matters worse, Lee Cooper picked up an injury during the warm-up, leaving on the bench Barry Marwick, Darren McGuiness and Steven Morrison, none of whom were match fit. In the 5th minute Thistle went in front when a superb shot from the edge of the box flew into the net.

Unsurprisingly, it had been a slow from Colony with new players trying to settle, and others out of position, but they soon settled down and refused to let their heads drop.  They were quickly back in the match, when, with 7 mins played, Graeme Cochrane made a good run down the left side of the pitch, cut into the box and got a shot away. The Thistle made a good stop, but former player, now trialist Adam Maitland who, as always, was sniffing about in the box was on hand to sweep the rebound home to equalise.  No team dominated as both looked to go ahead, but in the 40th minute, the ball was played into the visitor’s box from the left and produced a great chance for Kevin Bonarius to put Colony ahead, but his header was just past the post.                            Half Time: - Colony Park   1 – 1   Bridge of Don Thistle
The second half was just as competitive, with both sides contesting every ball, but with no real penalty box action, but this was about to change.

On 67mins, Bridge of Don put pressure on the home side and saw an effort hit the post, but they got their reward three minutes later by scoring again to go 1-2 up.

Colony still refuse to buckle, and went in search of another equaliser, and it came shortly thereafter. On 75mins a mistake from the Bridge of Don left back allowed Graeme Cochrane to drive forward down the left at pace cut into the box and fire a shot into the top right corner of the goals. 2-2 The home side now had their tails up, and on 80mins. they were ahead for the first time.
This was a well worked goal from Colony, starting with great passing from the back. The ball was played forward to striker Adam Maitland, who turned a visiting defender with a great piece of skill and drove forward towards the box. He had the presence to look up and found Bryce Dawson who made a run to the edge of the box from right back. Bryce on the first touch smashed the ball home bottom left of the goals from the edge of the box.

Steven Morrison immediately replaced Maitland, who had run himself into the ground, and took up an unfamiliar position as the attack front man, with instructions to keep possession of the ball as the home side attempted to close the game out. Colony dealt with everything thrown at them for the final part of the game to record an excellent victory.                           Full Time: - Colony Park   3 – 2   Bridge of Don Thistle

There is a steely determination and work ethic in this Colony side that was not evident for large parts of last season, and great credit must go to those who played in this match, especially Adam Maitland, Oscar Duncan and Gary Davidson who “came out of retirement” and gave their all. Huge credit must also go to the Manager and his coaches who were able to field a team who believed that they could win in these exceptional circumstances. Give yourselves a pat on the back.
