In the opening exchanges it was the Bears who had the better of the chances, Danny Meadowcroft going close with a back post header. Saul Henderson was working hard and forced a couple of early corners but the Bears cutting edge in front of goal was lacking. Bev Burey put in a lovely cross but no one could get the finish in at the far post.
The home side settled down and started to pay some decent football and Craig Ellison had to be sharp to keep them out. Shots began reigning in, but most were wide of the target.
The opening goal came on 34 minutes, a defence splitting pass to Aidan Thomas saw him drive the ball past Ellison. The only clear chance of an even.
Half Time Westfields 1-0 Congleton
The second half belonged to the home side and in particular Aidan Thomas who added three more to his first half strike. First with a low drive on 56 minutes, 2-0, then ten minutes later he latched onto another defence splitting pass to finish well, 3-0 and two minutes later he made it 4-0.
The Bears didn’t give up and pressured the home goal, winning a succession of corners. Their only reward came four minutes from time when Mini Adegbenro found the back of the net, 4-1.
The final whistle meant an early exit for the Bears from this years FA Cup and a long journey home.
