The Bears travelled to Northwich looking to improve on their opening day draw at Barnoldswick and were without skipper Tom Morris who picked up an injury in that first game.

The early chances fell to the home side with Jamie McLellen getting a good block in and keeper Craig Ellison dealing with a couple of headers. The Bears were dealt an early blow when Jordan Lorde had to limp off and was replaced by John Main (who was himself injured in the second half). It was Main who had the best Bears chance when he struck a free-kick just outside the box, inches over the bar. The hosts had a similar chance a few minutes later but this went even higher and over. Northwich were creating a number of openings but the Bears stood firm.
Mini Adegbenro had a shot well saved low down and then Saul Henderson saw the keeper charge out and grab the ball just as he was ready to shoot. Adegbenro was again off target after good work from Henderson. Debutant Danny Meadowcroft then dealt well with a Vics attack. As the half closed the home side pushed forward and won a series of corners with Paul Connor hoofing the last one clear. The final chance fell to Main but he saw his shot saved.
Half Time
Northwich Vics 0-0 Congleton
The second half started with more Vics pressure, firstly a shot going wide then McLellen heading away. Adegbenro had the Bears first half-chance with a snap shot over the bar. Sam Freakes then came on for his debut to replace the injured Main.
Lots of Vics pressure was being exerted but the Bears almost took the lead when Adegbenro shot from just inside the box and the keeper had to be quick to block the ball low down.
The only goal of the game came on 66 minutes. Ryan Winder picked up the ball just inside the Bears area and curled a peach of a shot hard and low into the near post. 1-0.
Northwich almost extended their lead when a short free-kick resulted in a shot from the angle hitting the bar. Minutes later Henderson did the same thing with a long range shot cannoning off the bar. This was followed by a McLellen header from a corner going inches over the bar.
The final whistle brought to an end a tight game and the Bears first defeat and Northwich’s first win.
Team: Ellison, Connor, Ryder, McLellen, Meadowcroft, Speed, Lorde (Main 7 (Freakes 57)), Brislen (De Ataide 69), Henderson, Burey, Adegbenro
