The first half saw the Bears play some excellent football, knocking the ball around well and creating lots of chances. John Main had the first early chance, firing at the keeper then Padiham got round the back but Burnett fired wide. Emini Adegbenro had the ball in the net but Dan Cope was flagged off side, a correct decision. Main and Cope then had chances, both shooting wide.
On 12 minutes Cope ran on to a poor Padiham throw in and lobbed the keeper from the edge of the box to open the scoring. Five minutes later Cope broke down the right, crossed hard and low and Tom Morris, charging into the box, fired home, 2-0 Bears.
Josh Ryder got on the score sheet two minutes later, finishing well from an Adegbenro cross, 3-0. It was all Congleton now and after more good work from Cope, his cross to Main saw the keeper make a great point blank save. Cope again tried his luck with an overhead from a Rick Peters cross, overhead and over the bar.
Padiham finished the half well and saw plenty of the ball but created very little in front of goal.
Half time Congleton Town 3-0 Padiham
The visitors started the second half on the front foot as the Bears sat back and had the better of the play, however the home side had chances as Adegbenro and Peters saw shots go wide and Cope’s deep cross was flicked out by the keeper.
Padiham continued to build and Fenlon had a clear opening but shot wide then a freekick was played deep into the Bears box forcing Craig Ellison into a good save low down. Hill then fired across the Bears goal but no one collected.
Saul Henderson replaced Cope on 68 minutes and Kieron Brislen came on for Jonathon Beaumont, who had had good solid game. Henderson went close after getting his head to a Morris free kick but the ball just cleared the bar.
Ryder was playing well at the back and was on hand to cut out a dangerous Padiham attack. Henderson then forced the Padiham keeper into a smart save with his feet and Main saw his shot saved after another superb Paul Connor cross. It wasn't Padiham's night as they finally managed to get past Ellison but the final shot was wide.
Bears final sub saw Jordan Lorde come on on 86 minutes and his first touch saw him collect a ball just inside the box. He beat the defender, drew out the keeper and fired under home to seal an emphatic win for the home team.
