A huge few months of work has seen some all staff undertake the FAW Safeguarding, FAW First Aid in Football Awareness and gain new and valid DBS and FAW numbers in preparation for another huge season for the football club.

Our staff for the new season sees the club possess three UEFA Pro license holders and candidates, two UEFA A license holders, 18 UEFA B License holders and candidates and 5 FAW C Certificate holders.

On top of this the club boasts three UEFA B GK license holders, one UEFA C GK license holder, four level three personal trainers and four degree holders in Sports Coaching, Sports Science and Sports Therapy fields respectively.

In my mind there is no doubt we have the best academy coaching team in the country who are qualified, driven and committed to the long term development of Nomads Academy players.

New Staff

A warm welcome to new Nomads staff including our under 8s coaches Brad Commins and Carl Butler. Both are FAW C Certificate holders and have over five years’ experience coaching at both Deeside Dragons and Flint Town United, working with sides from academy from under 7s to 11s, giving them huge experiences to pass on to our new intake of academy players.

Carl himself has been a Nomads Academy coach previously, along with being a player for Connah’s Quay Nomads first team and represented Wales at under 21 level and was at Liverpool academy as a youngster. A big welcome to both Carl and Brad.

Although joined at the latter stages of last season, the 2019/20 season will be the official start for Elise Hughes assisting our under 9s alongside Jordan Parry. Elise has just completed her level three in sport course at Coleg Cambria and is undertaking her UEFA B License this Summer.

Even more impressive is Elise has recently signed a first team contract with Everton ladies and is already a Wales international, being awarded the FAW Young Women’s Player of the Year for 2019. Elise will be a huge addition for the academy program.

Jordan Jackson is a recent addition for next seasons under 11s and will assist Jordan Taylor who undertakes his first season in a Head Coach position. Jordan Jackson has just finished his first year of the new foundation degree course in Sports Coaching at Coleg Cambria and is a FAW C Certificate holder. He is also the current manager of Rhydymwyn youth side and at just nineteen years of age has an exciting coaching career ahead of him.

Our U13s sees the official start of Graham Roberts who will assist long serving Mark Rowlands who take on last season’s Northern Championship winning side U12s team. `Graham is a very active and experienced coach who currently coaches at Manchester City and Chester University men’s side. A UEFA B License holder with the Welsh FA, Graham has already proven last year in his short stint with the U16s he will be a great addition to the club.

Mick Nickson has returned to the football club to assist our U14s this season alongside Leighton Sumner. Mick aided our U15s two season ago and is a welcome addition again to the football club.

Continuing within our keeper department we welcome Aaron Whitehouse who will work alongside Neil Ebbrell and Dave Shaw within the goalkeeper section. Aaron has coached for a number of years at Aston Park Rangers and holds the UEFA C GK license. Aaron will head up the mini section of our goalkeeping department working with all keepers at least once a week across under eight to under eleven age groups.

Structure

As we continue to progress and evolve, it is vital our structure moves alongside this also.

The. academy director role has now become a Head of Coaching and Head of Youth position. I'm pleased to announce Gareth Richards and Leighton Sumner in full-time position with Gareth taking up assistant Head of Coaching and Leighton Sumner assistant Head of Youth.

Our mini phase section of the club will now consist of our under 8 to under 11 teams. Leighton Sumner will be Head of Mini Phase for this coming season.

The youth phase now includes our under 12s and will run through to our under 15s age groups. Leighton Sumner will also lead this phase and will be Head Coach of the under 14s each season within this role.

With the huge continued success of the Nomads Academy Coleg Cambria scholarship program, this will be led again by Gareth Richards who will also be the under 19s Head Coach in the Welsh Premier Development League. A change to the structure now sees the under 16s progressed into our senior phase along with our under 18 and 19 sides. We believe this will aid the progression from under 16s to full time scholarship program and aid the transition for our players to the final step of the ladder before representing the first team.

Gareth has both the UEFA A senior and youth license as well asa degree in Science and Football (BSc) and will be leading our under 19s again in both the Category 1 North West Colleges league on Wednesdays along with the Sunday fixtures in the Welsh Premier Development League. Iain will continue to be assisted by Jordan Parry, Richard Cusato with Matt Sampson and Kevin Manley running the under 18s side also aided by Leighton Sumner.

Our goalkeeper department has strengthened yet again. Neil Ebbrell will be leading the goalkeeper department for his tenth consecutive season! Specifically working with senior phase keepers U16-U19 twice a week. Neil has always been pivotal part of the whole football club and his vision and recruitment for this department is second to none. Our youth phase goalkeepers as already stated U12s to U15s will have two sessions a week led by Dave Shaw and our mini phase keepers one session a week led by Aaron Whitehouse. These sessions will be spread across the Quay 3G and Deeside Stadium giving all goalkeepers vital work on both 3G and grass.

Another massive addition and progress on the structure is Lucy Harrison of Lifestyle Fitness, who will be continuing her role as Head Strength and Conditioning coach. Specifically working weekly with our senior and youth phase players. Players who have already worked with Lucy will testify the benefit of her meticulous physical sessions and programs which have been compiled to aid players physical development.

Another vital and long serving member of staff who will continue her role in the academy is Gemma Bamford. A Sports Therapy degree holder, Gemma has been such an important member of staff in aiding players recovery for many years and we are very lucky to maintain her services. We are very fortunate to regain her services for another season.

Another long serving member of staff at the club and academy is Trevor Green who remains the clubs Child and Welfare officer. A key role which Trevor has been working hard on already, ensuring coaches DBS certificates are valid and up to date. He has been huge aid for the club when we face off field challenges and can be used for aid for any issues parents or players may be going through off or away from the pitch.

Another continued aid for the academy, who will be helping the academy both on and off the pitch is long serving Kevin Manley. Along with assisting our under 18s, Kev will be continuing his role as the academy registrations officer, aiding all players registrations and potential international clearance issues.

The final addition to the structure, sees former coach Craig Griffiths become the academies Head of Media. Craig will be taking professional photographs each week and aid myself with numerous stories and articles each week for the academy website.

After big reflection after all seasons, we believe these changes have huge positives and set up an exciting 2019/20 season for all Nomads Academy staff and players.

Qualifications and Contact Details

Where many believe this is the quiet season, it has been very different for the academy, as we prepare for the 2019/2020 campaign.

All staff have been through FAW Safeguarding and FAW First aid training courses along with a number of our coaches currently on or starting UEFA B, A, Pro License courses along with three members of staff attending the up coming National Conference in Newport this weekend.

All of Nomads Academy staff including head coaches, assistant coaches and support staff all hold valid FAW and UEFA qualifications, DBS, First Aid Safeguarding and FAW Numbers.

Although UEFA guidelines only state that one coach per age group must hold the valid FAW First Aid qualification, Connah’s Quay Nomads have paid for all its staff within to do this course and the Safeguarding both active coaches and support staff also, ensuring best quality of care at all times for all Nomads Academy players.
