Missed kicks cost Consett

A string of early offences saw Consett punished and soon found themselves 0-6 down playing catch up from the off. Consett responded well and after a good phase of play, Hodgson showed excellent strength to fight his way over the Acklam try line, unfortunately the try was disallowed after the referee awarded Acklam a scrum as Hodgson knocked on whilst attempting to ground the ball.

Wayward kicking by Consett saw two penalty opportunities go begging as they struggled to get off the mark. Things went from bad to worse for the home team as some strong running from the Acklam full back Dickenson, and missed tackles in the Consett back line resulted in a converted try for the visitors, 0-13.

The lead was further extended after Consett were penalised for a high tackle and Acklam’s Ashton slotted the penalty, 0-16.
Consett finally got going after Hodgson plucked an interception, the resulting possession saw Haydn Petch cross the line after some good support play by man of the match Gareth Henderson. The conversion was unsuccessful, 16-5.

A number of penalties in close succession saw Acklam reduced to 14 men just minutes from half time. However the away side managed to halt the Consett forward pack efforts and reached half time without conceding any more points, half time.

Early into the second half Acklam were reduced to just 13 men and with the extra weight in the pack, Consett’s number 8 Michael Holland scored their second try of the game after a dominant scrum. The conversion attempt was again missed, 10-16.

Consett took the lead for the first time as they made good use of an overlap allowing Dan Clark to touch down. Marshall finally sorted himself out and added the extras. 17-16.

The home side struggled to gain possession of the ball in the final 10 minutes as Acklam dominated the territory. Consett were reduced to 14 men after Lewis McQueen was unfortunate to receive a yellow card for use of the feet in the ruck, even though the Acklam player was killing the ball.

The extra man allowed Acklam to camp in the Consett half for the remainder of the game, they were awarded a penalty that was converted giving them the lead going into the final minutes. Consett were unable to respond and Acklam took the victory after a hard fought game.

Consett will feel unlucky not have won after being the better team for large parts of the game. Unfortunately, missed try scoring opportunities and poor goal kicking resulted in nothing more than a losing bonus point.
