Consett enjoy nice lie in at West Mill Playing Fields!

We travelled to Bishop on a nice sunny autumn morning. We were missing a couple of players due to injury or illness but we were still confident that we had enough quality in the side to put up a good account of ourselves. We lined up 1.Conall Ruddick 2.Joe Hull 3.Ciaran Horgan 4.Scott Redshaw 5.Sam Currie 6.Matthew Gunnion 7.Dan Smith 8.Christy Wood 9.Nathan Williamson 10.Keiran Dover 11.Matthew Lovett 12.Alex Jackson 13.Joe Charlton 14.Josh Jelly 15.Dylan Telford with the replacement being Declan Flynn playing his first game for the team.

I'd overheard a Bishop parent saying that they were well up for this game after a disappointing defeat by Durham City the week before and this certainly showed when the game kicked off. All credit to Bishop as they put pressure on us at every opportunity and they raced into a 25-0 half time lead, with 4 try's, 1 converted and a penalty. I can honestly say that this is the worst half of rugby I have seen the lads play, we did not get out of our own half, gave them far too much space which their backs cleverly exploited with ease and we were nowhere to be seen at the breakdown! Consett were told that we had to wake up quickly or we would be on the end of a good thrashing and that we were a lot better than our first half showing so go out and get some pride back.

Due to an injury to Dan, we had to reshuffle the team with Alex moving into the pack at second row, Scott moving to openside flanker and in the backs Josh moved to outside centre, Joe C. to inside centre with Declan coming on to the wing. The lads took the half time message on board and started putting pressure on Bishop, squeezing the space and we were finally in the game! Following some good phases of play, the ball was worked out wide where Joe C. stretched his legs to evade the tackles and cross the whitewash for his first try for the club and the teams first try of the season. After Bishop quickly hit back to restore the 25 point gap, we made the game interesting with 2 try's in quick succession, the first from Christy who powered over the line following a penalty 10m out and the second from Joe C. again who weaved between a couple of gaps brilliantly before crossing the line to make the score 30-15. We had Bishop rattled but they regained their composure well to complete the scoring and make the final score 35-15.

Consett could be proud of their second half efforts and gave Bishop a game once we put our minds to it and woke up but we need to start switching on from the beginning of games and stop making life hard for ourselves. Man of the match was Joe C. for the second week running. As well as getting 2 try's to his name, he also chased back excellently on a couple of occasions to deny certain try's and on this evidence he is going to be great addition to the team.
