Cancellation of 2020/21 season confirmed

Last night the club received an email from the FAW to confirm it had been notified that the ‘Elite Status’ designation would not be reinstated for the JD Cymru North by the National Sport Group which includes representation from Sport Wales and the Welsh Government.

As a result, the 2020/21 season has been cancelled due to the ongoing public health situation and the current Welsh Government COVID-19 legislation which meant there was deemed to be insufficient time to safely complete the reduced fixture programme.

Borough are naturally disappointed at the outcome but remain hopeful that the public health situation will continue to improve and that it will be possible to enjoy a full pre-season and 2021/22 campaign.

Speaking after the announcement, club Chairman Chris Wilton commented:-

“This is a massive disappointment for everyone at Borough and for clubs across North Wales. We had all hoped to be able to get the season underway but it seem that we have been beaten by what is hopefully a once in a lifetime public health catastrophe.

Everyone at the club has been fantastic throughout and I would like to thank the management team, staff, players, volunteers and committee members for their hard work and positive attitude during such a difficult period. I would also like to thank our sponsors for their generosity and the supporters for their patience.

This situation has affected the First Team, Reserves and Junior Teams who are all desperate to get back to playing as soon as it is safe to do so. We all have our fingers crossed that the situation continues to improve and that a degree of football normality can quickly return.

There has been a lot of social media commentary around this issue and whilst I understand the sense of frustration have to say the tone of some of it has been pretty gratuitous and unhelpful. Personally, I hope that going forward the clubs as key stakeholders can have a meaningful, positive and central role in collaborating with the FAW and other relevant authorities in securing a successful return to football for all of us.”
