Goals from Matty Williams and Alex Darlington, either side of a Phil Doran effort for Borough, secured the win for the Welsh Premier League side. In a repeat of last year’s third round match, the tie was again settled in extra time.
TNS got off to a flyer scoring after just six minutes, following good work by Chris Marriot down the Saints left. The left back dribbled to the by line and his cut back was calmly slotted home by Williams.
The Tangerines were rewarded for a tireless display, as marauding left back Doran equalised in the dying minutes of the match to take the tie into extra time. After some accurate passing in the centre of midfield, man of the match Ryan Wignall found Doran who smashed home with his left foot from just inside the box to the delight of the home support.
The Saints responded almost instantly with Darlington restoring their lead early in the first half of extra time. Mike Wilde intercepted a Matty Holt back pass and after Wilde’s initial effort was saved, Darlington made no mistake with the rebound.
The home side began to take more risks as they went in search of an equaliser and had goalkeeper Louie Mackin to thank for a couple of smart one on one saves as TNS broke quickly on the counter attack.
Despite pinning the visitors into their own box for the final few minutes, ultimately it was not to be for Borough and they were consigned to a third consecutive defeat to bring their Welsh Cup involvement to an end for another season.
Manager Chris Herbert was left understandably disappointed, commenting that, “we had a game plan and we stuck to it. With a little more luck we would have come away with a big upset but it wasn’t to be.”
He added, “the assistant manager John Keegan and myself are very proud of the lads performance. I wish TNS all the very best in the next round.”
Before kick off the bumper crowd observed a minute’s silence following the passing of former South African President Nelson Mandela.
S4C’s Sgorio cameras were also at the match and highlights of the weekend’s third round fixtures will be aired in Monday night’s show.
