Conwy manager Chris Herbert's summer recruitment drive led to eight new players coming into the starting line-up to make their league debuts at Guilsfield. One blow was the news that forward Ryan Wignall was ruled out with a hamstring strain.
In difficult, blustery conditions, Borough soon had the home side on the rack with Aden Shannon & Sean Thornton going close early on. After 20 mins a wicked corner kick taken by Thornton was cleared off the line. Alan Bull then had his effort from inside the box well blocked as the Tangerines found the home keeper in great form.
Former Sunderland man, Thornton, was instrumental in a number of Conwy moves and linked up well with Phil Doran on the left hand side. Thornton went down inside the box after clever play took him down the bye-line but the ref waved away the penalty appeal.
Conwy Borough then went down to 10 men as captain Chris King sustained a nasty gash to his head but after prolonged medical attention he bravely went back out onto the field. It was during this phase when Conwy were a man down that Guilsfield had their best chance of the game as Louis Mackin was forced to make a great save when the Guilsfield forward went thorough on goal.
Shannon again went close as his effort from outside the box curled onto the bar. Alan Bull then pulled off another save from keeper as the Borough faithful wondered how the score-line remained 0-0 at half-time.
In the second half Conwy played into the wind but the pattern of the game remained the same with Conwy piling on the pressure.
This time it was Phil Doran's turn to hit the woodwork with Mike Jukes firing the rebound wide. Jukes then pulled the ball back to Shannon inside the box but his shot was straight at keeper.
The deadlock was finally broken on 65 minutes after a Conwy corner was cleared, the ball fell to Steve Cunningham whose pass found Darren Moss inside the box and he coolly slotted past the keeper to put Conwy 1-0 up to the delight of his team-mates.
Conwy almost scored a tremendous second goal as Phil Doran started a move well inside his own half and exchanged passes with substitute Ellis Healing. The full-back, who had a superb game and probably edged the man of the match award, then jinked his way inside the box to beat the defender but put his shot agonisingly wide.
The much deserved second goal came on 83 minutes as Alan Bull waltzed his way inside the box to go past two defenders and fire past the keeper.
The Tangerines had further chances to add to the total as the game finished 2-0 to secure a convincing opening day win.
After the game Chris Herbert was pleased with his sides efforts: "It was a good performance. We created alot of chances but didn't take them so put ourselves under a bit of pressure.
"I just told the lads at half-time not to panic and the rest will come and in the end it did."
