Conwy Borough suffered a 2-0 defeat to Caernarfon Town in the race for second place

Conwy Borough went down 2-0 at home to Caernarfon, the Tangerines first loss under Darren Moss and Assistant Aden Shannon. The win takes the Canaries four points ahead of Conwy, but Borough have two games in hand on their rivals, with the race for second place set to go down to the wire.

The home side were forced to play the majority of the game with ten men, after Steve Cunningham’s dismissal in the 11th minute. The robust challenge was deemed from behind by the referee and for the second game running the Tangerines were a man down inside the first half.

Caernarfon looked to take advantage of the extra player early on and had a number of half chances, with Jordan Barrow testing Louie Mackin from long distance on two occasions.

Conwy settled midway into the half and the game turned into a real midfield battle with neither side able to carve out any clear cut chances.

Just before the break Phil Doran flashed a header wide before Danny Desormeaux saw his effort deflect wide for a corner. Ywain Gwynedd, on the receiving end of Cunningham’s challenge, then caught Matty Holt in the head and was lucky to escape with just a caution.

The second half burst into life immediately, with Lewis Codling forcing Louie Mackin into a smart save. Conwy responded in kind with Gareth Sudlow winning a back post header that was stopped on the line by Paul Pritchard.

Teddy Whelan then set Kyle Wilson away, but the striker pulled his shot just wide. Codling looked lively and saw a great sliced effort cannon back off the crossbar, all inside ten minutes of the restart.

Codling was not to be denied a second time and struck his shot low into the bottom corner of the net. The former Everton youngster found space on the edge of the box and buried his shot to open the scoring.

Moss introduced Ellis Healing and Sean Myler to try and find an equaliser and both had an immediate impact. After winning a free kick just outside the box, Healing took it himself and clipped the top of the bar on the way over.

Minutes later he cut in from the left and unleashed a great drive that Pritchard tipped onto the post, before saving Myler’s follow up.

As the Tangerines continued to push forward in search of an equaliser they left themselves exposed at the back, with Darren Thomas in particular a threat on the break.

Having put an earlier effort just wide and seen another rebuffed by Mackin, Thomas sealed the points in stoppage time. After Codling played a delightful through ball, the attacker rounded the keeper well and smashed the ball into the open goal.

After the match manager Darren Moss said his players were determined to get back to winning ways next weekend, as they travel to Penycae who are still battling to beat the drop.
