Meeting between both Corsham U11 sides provides chance to blood new players

Corsham Falcons extended their winning streak in the Bath & District U11 8-a-side competition with a win over none other than sister team Corsham Hawks.

The evening started with a bang as Hawks' Ben Burley took a wicket with the first ball of the match. After that, however, Falcons steadily built their score throughout their 16 overs.

Aggressive running between the wickets by Lauren Strickland and Katy Cobb saw them accrue 23 in their four overs. The innings accelerated further when William Peach came in to hit three consecutive boundaries in a single over. Even so, Falcons' final pair were restricted by two tight overs at the death by Raul Franco-Overington and Rhys Eley. Falcons finished on 117-2 (adjusted score 307).

The Hawks reply was a see-saw affair. They got off to a flying start as openers Burley and Franco-Overington scored freely. However, the pair also lost wickets, including the completion of a hat-trick for Alfie Johnson following on from his two consecutive wickets at the end of his previous game for the U11s.

With a tight finish still looking possible, standout bowler Strickland sent down two overs for just two runs to swing the game in favour of Falcons. Not to be deterred, Hawks captain Evie Dixon hit back with several elegant boundaries only for Anya Verma to take three wickets in his two overs to halt the counterattack. Hawks eventually finished on 96-7 (adjusted score 261).

The result keeps Falcons at the top of the north-east division of the competition with Hawks lying third. However, this was about much more than the result. Following yesterday's heavy defeat to the big guns of South Wilts in the 11-a-side league, this was a welcome chance for more of the club's large squad of mainly inexperienced U11 boys and girls to get another taste of competitive cricket.
