Match Report - Llanrhaeadr Ym Mochnant

On a bitterly cold February day Corwen hosted Llanrhaeadr Ym Mochnant in the first of three home games in a row and they were hoping to build on their impressive 4-2 win at Builth Wells in their previous fixture.

The first goal of the game came in the eleventh minute, when a free kick played into the Corwen box was spilled by Corwen goalkeeper Will Hughes, allowing captain Joe Vaughan to find the back of the net with a tap in.

Four minutes later the visitors doubled their advantage from another set-piece, as Joseph Evans played the ball into the Corwen box, where Daniel Kelly lost his marker and headed the ball home from close range.

The hosts looked for a way back into the game from a Scott Evans free kick, which was hit low to the box and spilled by goalkeeper Dyfrig Jones and chased down by Luke Appleby; however the Llanrhaeadr number one was able to recover.

On the half hour mark Dyfrig Jones hit a clearance short under pressure from the Corwen attack, which allowed Matthew Pleavin to cross the ball into the box, where Tom Williams headed the ball wide at the far post.

At the other end Llanrhaeadr looked to score a third goal from a set-piece, but the ball was headed over the bar.

As the game entered the final five minutes of the half Corwen were awarded a free kick in a dangerous position, which Scott Evans took and he was able to float the ball up and over the wall, but with the keeper beaten he was unable to celebrate, as the ball hit the underside of the crossbar.

A minute later Tom Williams was tearing down the wing with the ball and sent a low shot at goal, which looked as if it had been dealt with by Dyfrig Jones; however the ball somehow went through him and into the back of the net to half the deficit.

On the brink of the interval William France went for goal from a free kick on the edge of the D, but he could only curl his effort wide of the post.

In the opening minute of the second half Will Hughes came sprinting off his line and out of the penalty area to challenge for and clear the ball, which looked as if it was going out for a throw-in, but was collected on the touchline at the halfway line by William France, who looped the ball at goal and saw it drop into an unguarded net for a candidate for goal of the season as Will was clambering back to his goal line.

The score was four-one two minutes later as a Tomos Evans effort caused a scramble in the box, which was not dealt with and crept in to give Corwen a mountain to climb.

The first step of climbing the mountain came in the fifty-seventh minute, when Tom Williams came down the wing with the ball and crossed it into the penalty area, where Daniel Kay tried to clear the ball, but was unable to sort his feet out, causing the ball to go towards goal, where despite Dyfrig Jones clambering the ball away the eagle-eyed referee Aled Williams spotted the ball had crossed the line and awarded the goal, meaning that Daniel Kay had scored at both ends.

With twenty-five minutes to play Tom Williams looked to reduce the deficit to one goal, as he run down the wing took him past William France, but he curled his angled shot narrowly wide of the far post.

With quarter of an hour to play Will Hughes came off his line to challenge for the ball, which he collected, but spilt; however he was able to recover as William Morris challenged for the ball.

As the game entered the final ten minutes Dyfrig Jones was unable to gather a ball played into the box, allowing Scott Evans to get a shot away; however Corwen’s captain’s hopes of setting up a grandstand finish were thwarted, as his effort was cleared off the line.
