Corwen 0 v 2 Colwyn Bay - JD Cymru North – 12/10/2019. Attendance: 120

Corwen were set to host Colwyn Bay, who had made the switch from the English pyramid back to the Welsh pyramid prior to the season, for the first of two meetings in eight days, as the club’s will meet again at the War Memorial Park in the Welsh Cup in a week’s time.

In the tenth minute the visitors were awarded a free kick in line with the corner of the Corwen box, which Toby Jones took and went for the near post, where keeper Dylan Jones dived low to gather the ball.

Another set piece lead to a chance for the away side, as a corner was whipped into the Corwen box where Julian Williams was able to send a bullet header towards goal from close range, but Dylan was able to make a save.

Goal
With twenty-three minutes on the clock Corwen gave a free kick away in a dangerous position, which Thomas McCready took and curled around the wall and into the far corner of the goal.

Just after the half-hour mark Corwen captain Eilir Edwards played a corner into the box, where it was knocked out, but only as far as Tommy Davies, who floated a great ball into the box, where keeper Andrew Coughlin won the aerial battle for the ball.

Colwyn Bay’s Sion Edwards sent a shot at goal from distance, which Dylan tipped on the inside of the post, which saw the ball run along the line before being gathered by the Corwen keeper.

Sion Edwards was in the thick of the action again when he slid in to get on to the end of a cross and send the ball into the back of net, but he was unable to celebrate as the goal was disallowed for offside.

On the brink of half time Corwen put a good move together, which ended when Joe Williams headed the ball at goal, which was tipped over the bar by Andrew Coughlin.

Half Time

After the break Joe Williams tried to level the scores from a twenty-five yard free kick, but he could only blast the ball way over the crossbar.

A few minutes later Corwen put together a good move, which saw Tom Williams cross the ball into the Colwyn Bay box from near the touchline, which Ioz Jones could only head over the bar under pressure from the visitors defence.

Goal

In the sixty-third minute and a minute after coming off the bench Morgan Owen battled with his marker to get on to the end of a cross, which he was successful in doing as he got just above his marker to head the ball home to score for the visitors a goal that was against the run of play. The goal was Morgan’s first goal in senior football.

The hosts went in search of a way back into the game as the ball was crossed to Ioz Jones, who ran at goal with the ball before unleashing a shot which was saved by Coughlin. From the resulting corner Dale Davies was able to get a free header, which was also saved.

With quarter of an hour to play Colwyn Bay were awarded a free kick at the side of the box, from which they went for goal, but sent the ball straight into Dylan’s hands.

Eilir Edwards tried his luck with a shot from distance, which appeared to be heading for the top corner, but went just wide of the target.

There was some good build up play from the home side as the game entered the final six minutes, which saw the ball played back to sub Harry Pooler, who played the ball onto Joe Williams, who sent a powerful shot from distance wide of the target.

Colwyn Bay’s Mitchell Bryant was able to get a shot away, but he could only pull a good save out of Dylan.

In the ninetieth minute there was long build up play from Corwen, which lead to James Davies crossing the ball into the box from near the touchline, which Dale Davies leapt to head and sent the ball wide, but he claimed a foul, but the referee was not of the same opinion.

Full Time

The final whistle saw the visitors claim all three points; however the home side can take a lot of pride from a good performance against very strong opposition and deserved to take a point from the game.
