Porthmadog 1 v 2 Corwen - JD Cymru North – 02/11/2019

New manager Sion Tudor’s first game in charge of Corwen was against Porthmadog, a club that he was previously the assistant manager at.

Despite the recent wet weather the pitch at ‘Y Traeth’ was in good condition and the water had drained enough off the field to make it playable.

Goal
Corwen got out of the traps quickly and were awarded an early free kick, which was taken by Scott Evans and played on to Joe Williams who put into the path of Ryan Billington, who headed it to Dale Davies who was able to find space in the penalty area and find the back of the net give his current side the lead against his former club a 105 seconds into the game.

Melvin McGinness got his head on to the end of a pinpoint cross, but he was denied as his close range effort pulled a great reaction save out of Corwen keeper Nathan Roberts. From the resulting corner the away side won the ball and went on the counter attack, but a poor cross from Ioz Jones saw the ball go to keeper Paul Prichard and not into the path of Joe Williams who was waiting to shoot.

With fourteen minutes on the clock a cross was headed down by Melvin McGinness and collected by John Owen, who saw his shot kicked clear by Nathan Roberts.

Goal
The scores were level in the twenty-fourth minute when John Owen was able to get space in the box and shoot at goal, which Corwen’s Matthew Williams attempted to clear, but could only redirect the ball away from Nathan and into the corner of the net.

John Owen looked to give his side the lead when he got through on goal, but a great last ditch tackle from Harry Pooler prevented the striker from getting a shot away.

Corwen’s Owen Cordiner did well as he went down the wing with the ball, getting passed Tomos Emlyn-Jones in the process, and crossing the ball into the danger area, where Scott Evans’s shot from the edge of the box went narrowly wide of the target.

The last action of the half saw a corner played into the Corwen box, where a Porthmadog player saw his effort headed off the line by Eilir Edwards.

Half Time
After the interval a ball across the box cut out the Corwen defence and was met by the sliding John Owen who was able to get a toe to the ball, but could only pull a good save out of Nathan Roberts.

Goal
With an hour played former Porthmadog player Eilir Edwards played a throw in in to the home box, where Ryan Billington was able to get his head to the ball, but sent it against the crossbar and looked on as the rebound fell to Dale Davies, who made no mistake with his header to restore Corwen’s lead.

From the kick off Porthmadog attacked their guests and Melvin McGinness saw his shot saved by Nathan Roberts.

Melvin McGinness was lining up a sixty-fifth minute shot, but Harry Pooler was able to slide in and tackle the Porthmadog player.

The hosts were hoping to level the scores from a free kick, but the ball knocked into the wall and Nathan Roberts came off his line to collect the ball.

In stoppage time Ifan Jones took a free kick which was in line with the corner of the Corwen box, but he could only send the ball narrowly wide of the far post.

The host’s last effort at claiming a share of the spoils came when Melvin McGinness flicked a shot at goal, but Nathan Roberts was able to collect it.

Full Time
The final whistle meant the Corwen had made it back-to-back league victories and have now gone level on points with today’s hosts.
