Corwen 3 v 0 Llanfair United - JD Cymru North (played at Maes Tegid, Bala) – 01/01/2020

Corwen’s opening game of the decade saw them host Llanfair United at Maes Tegid on New Year’s Day.

In the opening seconds of the game the visitors went for goal with a shot from distance, which keeper Dylan Jones had to tip over the bar.

Tom Williams collected the ball on the wing and took on and went past Llanfair defender Jamie McVeagh before curling a low shot at goal, which was saved by goalie Mark Richards.

The next attack from Corwen saw Eilir Edwards play the ball to Dale Davies, who saw his shot deflected wide of the goal.

Goal

From a ninth minute corner the ball was played across the goal and to Tom Mann at the far post, where Tom headed the ball into the opposite corner of the net to open the scoring (pictured).

The home side went in search of further goals as Eilir Edwards started a move with a throw in, which went to Nathan Davies via his brother Dale, but Nathan saw his shot from distance go wide of the target.

Goal

On the half-hour mark the referee made use of the advantage rule to allow Corwen to continue an attack, which saw a Joe Williams shot from distance pushed wide by the keeper. From the resulting corner Corwen hit their opponents with a training ground move, as the corner was played out to Eilir Edwards, who was in acres of space after running forward from the back. Eilir knocked the ball into the penalty area, where Dale Davies volleyed the ball into the far corner of the net.

Corwen went in search of a third goal on the counter attack after winning the ball from a United corner and the ball was played across to Tom Williams, who saw his shot saved.

The last opportunity of the half came when Tom Williams played a cross into the path of Joe Williams, who saw his header saved.

Half Time

The away side came out of the second half looking to get back into the game, with Karl Seliaerts seeing a shot going out for a corner. A few minutes later a Llanfair corner caused a scramble in the Corwen box, but the eventual shot was dealt with.

Iorweth ‘Ioz’ Jones was able to find the back of the net for Corwen, but he was unable to celebrate as the offside flag was raised.

Red Card

In the sixty-fifth minute Andrew Hughes took a touch before shooting at the Corwen goal, where Dylan dived to make a save.
A minute later the ball was played into the Corwen box from a corner, where the ball was cleared off the line and cleared, but only as far as Ryan Evans, who saw his shot blocked on the line. Corwen then hit their opponents on the counter attack, with Tom Williams bearing down on goal, but he was stopped in his tracks in the D by Aron James, who received a red card for denying a goal scoring opportunity. From the free kick Joe Williams went for goal as he put some real venom into his shot, but he could only blast the bar over the bar.

As the game entered the final twenty minutes Dale Davies ran with the ball down the wing before crossing the ball towards Joe Williams who was sprinting into the box, but Joe couldn’t quite get on to the end of the cross.

Llanfair’s Andrew Hughes went for goal with a shot on the turn, but he could only send his effort over the bar.

Tom Williams went past Jamie McVeagh with the ball before unleashing an angled shot at goal, which was tipped over the bar by Mark Richards.

The away side looked to set up tense finish from a couple of late free kicks, the first of which Ryan Evans sent straight into the wall, the second Karl Seliaerts sent over the bar.

Goal

As the game entered the ninetieth minute Owen Cordiner ran with the ball before slotting it into the bottom corner of the net to seal victory.

Full Time

The final whistle confirmed a well-earned three points for Corwen and ensured they started the New Year off with a positive result and their first league clean sheet and home win of the season
