Kerry 0 v 5 Corwen - Ardal North East – 21/08/2021

Corwen second away game of the week saw them head to Kerry on what was supposed to be Saturday afternoon with torrential rain; however despite a bit of drizzle before the game the sun shone as Corwen took on a side nicknamed ‘The Lambs’.

It was the home side that ought to have taken the lead in the fourth minute, when Ethan Holloway saw off the challenge of one defender and despite being clipped by a second he stayed on his feet and unleashed a shot beyond the stranded Corwen keeper James Mallon, but saw his effort hit the far post.

With eight minutes on the clock Kerry’s James Price tried his luck from distance, but saw his effort go wide of the target.

The home side put pressure on their visitors with a series of corners in quick succession; however despite looking dangerous early on from set-pieces none of their efforts were able to bear fruit.

At the other end Owen Cordiner was able to beat the offside trap and was about to shoot at goal; however a great last ditch tackle from Daryl McWatt stopped him in his tracks.

In the seventeenth minute Owen was in the thick of the action again, as he was able to get through on goal on go round keeper Ryan Andrew and slot the ball into an unguarded net.

Two minutes later Owen doubled his and Corwen’s tally to make the score two-nil.

Owen went in search of his hat-trick as he was bearing down on the Kerry goal; however he sent his shot wide under pressure from Daryl McWatt.

Corwen’s Kel Davies had a couple of opportunities to get his name on the scoresheet, firstly on the half-hour mark, when Kerry gave the ball away, enabling Owen Cordiner to square the ball to Kel, who sent his shot wide. Four minutes later Kel was bearing down on goal, but a great challenge from Ryan Groves ended his run.

The visitors were three goals to the good in the thirty-seventh minute when Scott Evans played a corner into the box, where Ryan Billington was able to head the ball home.

Half Time

After the interval the ball was played forward to Owen Cordiner, who was able to get in a promising position, but he was unable to claim the match ball as he sent his shot wide.

Just before the hour mark a Kerry corner was played back to Charlie Mainwaring, who looked to get his side a foothold into the game, but he pinged his shot over the bar.

With sixty-one minutes on the clock Scott Evans blasted a shot at goal, which brought a great fingertip save out of Ryan Andrew.

With twenty minutes to play Corwen sub Tom Williams beat the offside trap to get one-on-one with Ryan Andrew, who he was able to get round and made no mistake as the placed the ball into the back of an empty net.

Five minutes later Owen Cordiner played the ball down the wing before crossing it into the six-yard box, where an unfortunate Kerry player slid in to try and deal with the ball, but he could only divert it into the back of his own net to make the score five-nil.

Owen had one final opportunity to complete his hat-trick as he got on to the end of a Tom Williams cross, but the ball got stuck under his feet and he was unable to get a shot away.
