Corwen 2 v 4 Dolgellau Athletic - Ardal North East – 16/10/2021

Corwen took to the field at their temporary home at Maes Tegid to take on Dolgellau Athletic on a chilly but dry October afternoon, which was a relief after the monsoon conditions the last time they played a home game. The two sides were familiar foes after meeting in pre-season on the day that Dolgellau found out that they had been given a place in the Ardal North East league.

Early on in the game David Edwards took a free kick twenty-five yards from the Corwen goal, which he was able to curl around the wall, but was only able to fund the outer side netting.

Goal

The deadlock was broken in the seventh minute, when Corwen lost the ball in midfield, enabling Joey Jones to play the ball forward to Gethin Evans, who crossed the ball into the box, but saw it go towards goal and just over goalkeeper Josh Williams’s fingertips and into the back of the net.

Goal

The away side doubled their advantage on the quarter of an hour mark, when a Dolgellau player went for goal from distance, forcing a good save out of Josh Williams; however he could only parry the ball and Owain Williams was the first to react to the ball and found the back of the net with a tap in.

The hosts went in search of a way back into the game as Owen Cordiner cut into the box from the wing and went past two defenders before playing a low cross towards James Davies, who was unable to adjust his feet enough to get a shot away.

Goal

With twenty-five minutes on the clock Scott Evans played a pin-point corer into the visitor’s penalty area, where Harry Pooler was on hand to send a bullet header beyond oncoming goalkeeper Darren Andrews.

Corwen went in search of an equaliser, but there task was made doubly difficult when Owain Williams played the ball to Jamie Jones, who’s shot from the edge of the box took a massive deflection that saw the ball loop into the air and go into the top corner of the net.

In the final stages of the opening half Scott Evans played an angled free kick into the penalty area, where the ball was flicked on by James Davies, which pulled a fantastic save out of Darren Andrews. Scott took the resulting corner, from which he was able to find the head of Harry Pooler, that saw the ball hit the underside of the crossbar and bounce on the line and go away from goal in a flash, with Scott clamming that the ball had crossed the line; however with the speed in which the incident occurred and with no goal line technology there was no way referee Matthew Jones could have awarded a goal.

Half Time

The first chance of note after the interval fell to the away side, as the ball was played across the box to Jamie Jones, who saw his effort hit the bar.

The home side looked to get a foothold into the game from a Scott Evans corner, but James Davies could only head the ball narrowly wide of the target. This was closely followed by Scott going for goal from an angled free kick, which he curled wide of the far post.

Goal

Corwen pulled a goal back in the sixty-seventh minute as Scott Evans went for goal from another free kick, which hit the underside of the bar before hitting goalkeeper Darren Andrews on the head and going into the back of the net. Although the goal may have to be reviewed by the dubious goals panel, it is safe to say that it will go down as Scott’s goal.

Three minutes later Owen Cordiner went for goal from the edge of the box, but his powerful effort went narrowly over the bar.

With quarter of an hour to play the ball was played across the box to James Davies, who tried to find Nick Owen from a cross, but there was too much on his effort for Nick to be able to get his head to the ball.

James went for goal himself when Owen Cordiner played the ball back to him, but his powerful shot from outside the box was gathered by Darren Andrews.

As the game entered the final three minutes of the ninety Scott Evans tried his luck from another free kick, but his effort from distance went wide of the goal.

A minute later Josh Williams gave away a free kick on the edge of his box, from which Dolgellau sent the ball straight into the wall, with the resulting shot from the rebound being gathered by Josh.

Goal

Any hopes of a comeback from Corwen were extinguished in the first minute of stoppage time when Jake Jones collected the ball from a throw in and sent his shot beyond Josh Williams.
