Match Report - Welshpool Town

Corwen headed to the Maesydre Recreation Ground on a Friday evening to take on Welshpool Town for a game under the floodlights. The sides met on a Friday evening at the War Memorial Park earlier in the season, with Corwen running out five-three winners.

The away side were playing up the slope in the first half and in the tenth minute Ryan Billington crossed the ball into the penalty area; however the ball was too high for Scott Evans to run on to it.

At the other end Ryan Edwards took a low shot at goal, causing Josh Williams to dive and make a save. Ryan Edwards was involved again when he ran onto a free kick and played the ball back towards the direction it came from, but his effort went across the goal and wide of the post.

Corwen’s Kevin Day tried his luck at breaking the deadlock with an effort from distance, but his effort went over the bar.

Josh Williams was brought into action on a couple of occasions before the interval, firstly when her tipped a low shot from James Clewlow wide of the target, which was followed by tipping a header over the bar.

Half Time

After the break the away side got out of the traps quickly and played the ball across to Oliver Crimp, who pinged his shot over the bar.

Corwen brought keeper Adam Clewlow into action when Scott Evans played the ball to Kevin Day, who curled a shot at goal from distance, but the Welshpool number one was able to make a save.

Goal

On the hour mark Scott Evans floated a free kick into the Welshpool penalty area, where the ball found its way to Kevin Day, who saw he shot saved and rebound into the path of Harry Pooler, who fired the ball home for a rare goal with his feet.

Penalty

The hosts were given a golden opportunity to level the scores three minutes later as they were awarded a penalty kick, from which Ryan Knott sent Josh Williams the wrong way to level the scores.

With sixty-seven minutes on the clock the away side gave away the ball, which sparked a counter attack from the hosts, which bore fruit when the ball was played across to James Clewlow, who hit a first time shot into the back of the net to give his side the lead.

The Lilywhites were given a free kick on the edge of the D with twenty minutes to play, which Ryan Knott took, and he brilliantly played the ball around the wall and into the bottom corer of the net.

Two minutes later Scott Evans looked to add to his impressive conversion rate from free kicks this season and he did just that as his effort from distance brilliantly went into the back of the net to bring Corwen back into the game.

With quarter of an hour player Scott looked to restore parity from another free kick, but this time he sent his effort narrowly over the bar.

Corwen had Josh Williams to thank for keeping the deficit at one goal as he pulled off a magnificent save, but unfortunately from the resulting corner Adam Knott was able to lose his marker and head the ball home.

The away side looked for a quick response as they hit Welshpool on the counter attack, with Scott Evans playing the ball to Kevin Day, who in turn found Oliver Crimp, who lobbed the ball over Adam Clewlow, but he had strayed offside.

Goal

In the final of the regulation minutes Scott Evans set up a grandstand finish as he found the back of the net again from another brilliant free kick to make the score four-three.

Penalty

Despite the best efforts of the away side it was the hosts that were given the best opportunity to add to the scoring as they were awarded another penalty kick, which Ryan Knott took, but he was denied the chance to take home the match ball as Josh Williams pulled off a great save.
