Chairman Phil Rooney has his say

I’m really pleased with the work that’s going on within the club, loads of positives, it’s great that we now have a youth team, already this is bearing fruit for the first team with a handful of the youth team getting call ups in pre season games and the signing of Sam Ellis, it goes to show that if your good enough, then your old enough, it’s great to welcome Sam into the first team set up, this year we are taking a slightly different approach, looking at young hungry players that want to play football, we are not going to try and compete with paying players £40+ a week, or what ever the teams in Coventry pay.

Many teams in Coventry will pay wages of £500 to £1500 per week to players - for what? To finish above their rivals? You can’t win the league on that money, I think that there needs to be a rethink at this level and above, money is killing the game, we have approached lads who do not play games at their club but get £30 a week to warm the bench, they’d rather do that than play every week with us - that’s just wrong, if you play, you need to play every week, if your not getting a game drop a level - don’t just sit there and fester for £30 a week, believe in yourself, if you’re good enough you’ll get your chance to play higher, if you work hard enough - rant over!

We want to give the younger lads a chance of playing in men’s football, we want a mix of youth and experience, at Copeswood we are lucky to have an pretty experienced team that are also still young men, a few have played many games at a higher level before joining us at Allard Way.

So we go again this Saturday at Allard Way, why not call in for a pint and a game - it’s free (not the pint!)

Keep up the good work to all the managers and coaches and players.

Phil Rooney
Chairman
Coventry Copsewood Football Club.
