MFL Premier Division

Saturday 2nd March - Sphinx Drive

RESULT: COVENTRY SPHINX 0-1 AFC WULFRUNIANS
GOALS:
14’ Jumaane Meggoe (AFC Wulfrunians)

An early first half goal was enough for the visitors to take all three points on Saturday. Sphinx will look at their missed opportunities to give them encouragement to get out of this recent run of form. Injuries and suspensions caused them problems for this fixture but that gave some of the Coventry Sphinx youth team the chance to take a place on the bench.

Wulfrunians opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a very well worked goal and despite the efforts of Sphinx, they couldn’t find the goal they needed. Opportunities presented themselves to Sphinx but a last second intervention on the line kept them out and a fine double save from Faulkner and Harkin efforts ensured the visitors held the lead at half time.

The second half began with the introduction of Sphinx Under 18s central midfielder Callum Maspers. He slotted straight into his usual position for his Coventry Sphinx first team debut and took it in his stride. Minutes later, Under 18s striker Dan Kelly joined the action for his longest spell on the pitch since being added to the first team squad. His enthusiasm and pace gave the Sphinx attack something a bit different but he didn’t get a clear cut opportunity to demonstrate his finishing. A couple of Matt Gardner headers were the closest Sphinx got to an equaliser and the result saw them slip to 7th in the league table.

A positive from the day were the performances of youth players Callum Maspers and Dan Kelly who coped well with their first team duties. Alex Pearson also took a place on the bench for the first time alongside his youth team mate Danny Bull. Now is a good time to be blooding the young players at the club and with some good experience behind them they could soon become important members of the squad in the near future.
FULL TIME: COVENTRY SPHINX 0-1 AFC WULFRUNIANS

COVENTRY SPHINX MAN OF THE MATCH: Scott Lower
Scott Lower may have had a season blighted by injury but when fit he still shows his class at right back. Callum Woodward gave it everything for the team as always and Charlie Faulkner worked hard to make something happen. Dan Kelly had some good game time and the youthful striker provided a different threat for Wulfrunians to deal with.

COVENTRY SPHINX TEAM: CROSS, LOWER ©, HANDS (Maspers 46 mins), O’GRADY, GUEST, STRINGFELLOW, GRANDISON, WOODWARD, HARKIN (Kelly 54 mins), GARDNER, FAULKNER. Unused Subs: Blythe, Bull and Pearson

Coventry Sphinx are back in action on Wednesday 6th March when they travel to Bromsgrove to face Worcester City.
