Crawley lose 2-1 at high flying Heath

Spartan South Midlands League
Premier Division
Tuesday 01 Oct 19
Colney Heath FC 2 v Crawley Green FC 1

An unfortunate own goal by Crawley’s Sam McClelland 5 minutes into stoppage time robbed Crawley of a point in a hard fought game. The win ensured that Heath’s 100% win record in the League stretched to 7 games. However their raucous celebration’s in front of Crawley’s dug-out, for which their Club apologised, were distasteful to say the least.

On a wet and windy night Crawley edged the first half in which both defences were in dominant form. Spencer Clarke-Mardell had an early header blocked and Crawley replied with a stinging shot from Michael Draycott which Conor Samson did well to parry wide.

A Heath corner from the left was then helped on by Jon Clements to Chris Griffin but his effort was cleared off the line by Adam Marsh. Crawley’s Phil Draycott was next to have an effort go wide and on the break Gorge Rose kept out a shot by Clarke-Mardell.

In the 38th minute Crawley took the lead. Following a long ball from the back Samson was closed down by Billy Lobjoit. Samson’s clearance was blocked by Lobjoit who scored from the rebound to make it 0-1.

In the second half Heath raised their game and dominated from the start. Crawley’s cause was not helped by an early injury to Liam McGovern and the Maroons struggled to keep the ball.

The pressure told on the hour when a cross from the right fell kindly to Danny Fitzgerald who drove the ball past Rose to make it 1-1. Crawley battled hard to keep in the game as Rose kept out an effort from Harry Lewis.

Rose then kept out a shot from Chris Blunden and Crawley replied with a shot from Marsh which went over.

As the game got heated in the closing stages Heath’s Mickey Shuttlewood was booked for a poor challenge on Aaron Morgan who could not continue.

Five minutes into added time Jack Woods was played in down the right. His shot skipped off the surface and cannoned into the goal off Sam McClelland.

It was tough on Crawley to come away with nothing but they must pick themselves up for the trip to Newport Pagnell on Saturday.
