Cray Wanderers crashed to a catastrophic 9-3 defeat at Kingstonian - the first time since 1966 that the Wands have conceded nine goals in a game.

Report by Jerry Dowlen

Depleted by recent departures of players and by injuries and suspensions, the Wands made a competitive start versus Kingstonian before conceding on 31 minutes.

Two goals at the very end of the first half put the home side in command, but after it went to 4-0 in the 50th minute Cray boldly fought back to make the score 4-2 with goals from Danny Phillips and Leigh Bremner (penalty) in the 53rd and 66th minutes.

But the remainder of the game turned into a disaster for Cray who had Michael Power carried off injured, and the powerful Ks forward line put five more goals past a depleted Cray defence.

Chris Saunders scored Cray's third goal in the 71st minute.

Six weeks ago, a full-strength Cray side showed their calibre with a 1-0 away win at top of the table Margate, but alarm bells are ringing after no win since then, and most lately two very heavy defeats against Enfield Town and Kingstonian.

Cray are at home to East Thurrock United on Tuesday (7.45pm)
