Club History

The club was founded in 1992 by some of us at the bar of the Vale Hotel Cricklade then owned by ex President and life member Charlie Ross and his wife Irene who is a current life member along with Martin Bickell.

A request for players was placed in the Cricklade Chronicle and the very positive response resulted in the formation of Cricklade Rugby Football Club. Initially players were committed to other clubs so Sunday fixtures were played, the first one against Aldbourne on the 6th Sept.

The second season moved to Saturday fixtures. We joined the Dorset & Wilts leagues in 1994 and withdrew when we found that the travelling involved was too time consuming to players and too costly to the club. We were able to rejoin 7 years later in 2001 when the leagues were re structured into North and South, reducing the travelling involved.

The club originally used pitches from Prior Park School and The Duke Of Gloucester Barracks, and after celebrating our 10th anniversary in 2001, we now play on our own professionally prepared pitch in the town kindly leased to us by the Town Council.

The first game to be played on that pitch was between Cricklade and the Club President Martin Bickell, played on 2nd September 2001. All the clubs we had played against were invited to send players to make up the President select XV squad, and about a dozen clubs were represented. The select XV played in a set of Gloucester shirts donated for the day by Premierships Gloucester RFC.

Over the years Cricklade Rugby Club have had some great tours all over England, West and South Wales and Ireland.

So if you are interested in playing or want a change of club or level then new players at any skill level are welcome so come along and enjoy our friendly club.
