Cropredy completed their Oxfordshire Senior League campaign in style on Saturday as they defeated champions elect Freeland 4-2, twice coming from behind Crop stunned the home side who will have to wait a bit longer to be crowned champions.
On a brilliant afternoon for football, Cropredy headed to the league leaders following a tough midweek goalless draw against Heyford knowing they were in for another difficult game. The visitors made a good start to the fixture going twice close in the opening 20 minutes through Harry Walters. The first opportunity came when Kurt Fox released Dan Reeves down the right hand side, he took a touch and cut the ball back to an arriving Walters who took the effort first time, beating the keeper but the defender got back to clear just before the ball rolled over the line. The next effort from Walters was a headed effort following a ball into the box down the left from Shaun Anderson, the header was glanced towards goal but the keeper managed to just about keep the ball out and pull off a good save.
Freeland grew into the half and took the lead after 25 minutes, a great strike from Liam Harris flew into the corner from just outside the box following a break away. The half time whistle brought to an end a good half with both sides going all out for the win, the game being played at a great pace especially considering the heat.
It didn't take Cropredy long to draw level in the second half, after 3 minutes some strong play down the down the right from Aaron Dineen saw him roll his man, get to the touchline and chip the ball perfectly into the path of arriving Harry Walters who headed home from 8 yards.
Freeland took the lead again just after the hour, a deep swung corner arrived at the back post with the front man Dan Taylor managing to squeeze his header between Dan Reeves and the far post, giving the home side the advantage.
The game continued to go from end to end for the remainder of its duration, with Aaron Dineen becoming more and more of a problem to the Freeland back line. It was Dineen who brought Cropredy back into the game with a tidy finish after being slipped in down the channel, with the ball bouncing and the keeper advancing he lofted the ball in to the net to bring Cropredy level. It wasn't until the final 7 minutes that the away side would grab their two goals to take the points, both of them coming from Aaron Dineen. Both came in similar fashion where Dineen found himself a yard and took efforts early, the keeper getting a hand too them but unable to keep the ball out.
A great showing from Cropredy against a strong Freeland side who at the moment still look good to lift the title.
With the league fixtures now completed for this season, attention now turns to the Presidents Cup Final against Marston Saints on Saturday 4th May over at North Leigh.
Up The Crop!
