Match Preview: Pontypridd RFC vs Cross Keys RFC

WRU Go.Compare Premiership Cup | Saturday 3rd October 2026 | Sardis Road | 2:30pm Kick-Off

Cross Keys turn their attention to cup rugby this weekend as they travel to Sardis Road to face Pontypridd RFC in the WRU Go.Compare Premiership Cup.

The Keys head into Saturday looking for a response following last weekend’s home defeat against Merthyr, while Pontypridd enter the competition having made a perfect start to their Premiership campaign.

It also renews a fixture with considerable recent cup history, with Cross Keys and Ponty having met in the 2025 Premiership Cup Final at Principality Stadium.

Last Time Out

Cross Keys suffered a 31–7 defeat against reigning Premiership champions Merthyr at Pandy Park last Saturday.

Saturday 26th September 2026
Cross Keys RFC 7–31 Merthyr RFC

The Keys entered the fixture looking to build on their previous home victory over Neath, but Merthyr continued their unbeaten start to the campaign and secured the points at Pandy Park.

Saturday now provides a change of competition and an opportunity to reset as attention switches from league points to knockout rugby.

2026–27 So Far

Cross Keys have faced a demanding opening month to the new season.

Round 1 – Saturday 5th September 2026
Llangennech RFC 52–33 Cross Keys RFC

Round 2 – Saturday 12th September 2026
Cross Keys RFC 32–27 Neath RFC

Round 3 – Saturday 19th September 2026
Narberth RFC 38–24 Cross Keys RFC

Round 4 – Saturday 26th September 2026
Cross Keys RFC 7–31 Merthyr RFC

The opening four rounds have produced one victory and three defeats, with the Keys now stepping away from Premiership action for a weekend as the cup takes centre stage.

The Opposition

Pontypridd could hardly have made a stronger start to the 2026–27 campaign.

The Valley Commandos have won each of their opening four Premiership fixtures, recording victories both home and away.

Round 1 – Saturday 5th September 2026
Newbridge RFC 29–32 Pontypridd RFC

Round 2 – Saturday 12th September 2026
Pontypridd RFC 23–21 Bedwas RFC

Round 3 – Saturday 19th September 2026
Llangennech RFC 17–21 Pontypridd RFC

Round 4 – Saturday 26th September 2026
Pontypridd RFC 43–19 Neath RFC

Four victories from four leave Ponty unbeaten heading into Saturday’s cup tie.

They have scored 119 points across those fixtures while conceding 86, with last weekend’s 43–19 victory over Neath their biggest winning margin of the season so far.

Recent Meetings

Pontypridd held the advantage when the clubs met during the 2025–26 Premiership campaign.

Saturday 18th October 2025
Pontypridd RFC 26–19 Cross Keys RFC

Cross Keys pushed Ponty closely at Sardis Road, with seven points separating the sides at the final whistle.

Saturday 28th February 2026
Cross Keys RFC 14–36 Pontypridd RFC

Ponty completed the league double when the sides met again at Pandy Park later in the campaign.

Cross Keys therefore return to Sardis Road looking to reverse last season’s results in a different competition.

Cup History

Saturday brings together two clubs with considerable shared history in Welsh knockout rugby.

Most recently, Cross Keys and Pontypridd met in the 2025 WRU Premiership Cup Final at Principality Stadium.

Saturday 5th April 2025
Pontypridd RFC 43–12 Cross Keys RFC

Only five points separated the sides at half-time before Ponty pulled clear after the interval to lift the trophy.

The clubs had previously met in two Welsh Cup Finals.

Monday 7th May 2012
Cross Keys RFC 32–19 Pontypridd RFC

The Keys produced one of the most memorable days in the club’s history to lift the Welsh Cup at the Millennium Stadium.

Two years later, the sides returned to Cardiff.

Sunday 4th May 2014
Pontypridd RFC 21–8 Cross Keys RFC

On that occasion it was Ponty who took the silverware.

Saturday therefore adds another chapter to a cup rivalry which has repeatedly brought the two clubs together on major occasions.

A Change of Competition

Knockout rugby provides a different challenge from the weekly demands of the Premiership.

There are no league points at stake, with progress in the competition decided over 80 minutes at Sardis Road.

For Cross Keys, the fixture also provides an opportunity to respond following a difficult opening month.

The Keys have demonstrated their attacking threat during the opening rounds, particularly in scoring 33 points away at Llangennech and five tries in the victory over Neath.

The challenge this weekend will be combining that threat with the accuracy and control required against a Pontypridd side carrying considerable early-season momentum.

Keys to the Game

  • Cup Mentality – League form takes a back seat once knockout rugby begins. Cross Keys will need to embrace the opportunity and remain in the contest throughout.
  • Start Strongly – Ponty have opened the season with four consecutive victories. Preventing the hosts from building early momentum at Sardis Road will be important.
  • Defensive Accuracy – Ponty scored 43 points against Neath last weekend. Maintaining organisation and limiting inexpensive opportunities will be crucial.
  • Take Opportunities – Cup matches can turn on individual moments. Cross Keys will need to be clinical when chances arrive.
  • Discipline and Territory – Giving away easy territory at Sardis Road can quickly create pressure. Discipline and game management will be important throughout the afternoon.

Back to Sardis Road

There is plenty of history surrounding meetings between these two clubs, particularly in cup competition.

From Cross Keys’ triumph in 2012 and Ponty’s response in 2014 to the 2025 Premiership Cup Final at Principality Stadium, knockout rugby has repeatedly brought the Keys and the Valley Commandos together.

This time, the setting is Sardis Road.

Pontypridd arrive unbeaten after four league victories, while Cross Keys travel looking for a response and the opportunity to progress in the cup.

One afternoon will decide who moves on.
