On a pleasant afternoon, bottom of the league Barbarians took on a David and Goliath-esque battle with league leaders, Whitton Lions. Not only being a huge game in terms of the league table it was also Joe De Meyers final game for the Baa Baas making it that much more significant.
From the off Barbarians came out hard hitting a strong Whitton back line and creating stable platform at the breakdown from which to play from. The pressure was put on by Barbars early particularly from multiple thunderous break throughs by battering ram Luke “Bosh” Halford which despite his attempts were unsuccessful in returning the points deserved for such great play. Whitton opened the score line with some creative play and a few missed tackles in the backs. Despite this minor set back Barbarians held the strong Whitton attack at bay keeping the score at 7-0. Some clever link up play between scrum half Rob Hart and Fly half Andy Darlison allowed Barbars to clear their lines and begin their attack.
Going into the second half and a stern team talk from captain of the day Joe De Meyer Barbars managed to trade scores with the Whitton Side who came out from the break with a fire in their bellies ready to show why they were a dominant force in the league. Throughout tiredness and fatigue from both sides Barbars kept within reach of the Whitton side keeping the score at 50-17. An exhausted Barbarians side fought in one final push to end the game with a score in the corner leaving the final score at 50-22. Both sides showed true sportsmanship in celebrating Joe’s final game starting with a tunnel for the man of the day, followed by some celebratory port pitchside and beer in the club house.
Congratulations to Whitton Lions on their league success and to Man of the Match Andy Darlison for a stellar performance.
Also a big thank you for Joe De Meyer and the commitment he has shown the the club over the years and good luck in his official retirement. Once a Baa Baa always a Baa Baa!
