Last Friday evening, during our End of Season Presentation, we took a few moments together to recognise the hard work and dedication from Steve Luxon that has helped shape our club over the years.
We also extend our sincere thanks to our local MP, Richard Foord, for kindly giving his time to join us and share a few words in celebration of Steve’s remarkable contribution.
So, after 11 incredible years as Senior Playing Chairman, our very own Steve Luxon is stepping down from his role, and what a legacy he leaves behind.
Steve’s decision to step down marks the end of an era defined by commitment, loyalty, and a level of service to Cullompton RFC that few will ever match. His journey at CRFC spans nearly four decades, hundreds of games, and a leadership that has helped steer the club through promotions, demotions, cup finals, and everything in between.
Steve’s first outing in a Cully shirt came way back in 1987 when he lined up for the 3rd XV away at Yatton, a baptism that set the tone for a playing career built on graft, loyalty, and a willingness to play wherever the club needed him, including the front row, an experience he summarised as “having my head shoved up my arse as a prop,” but he has mainly played in his preferred positions of No. 8 or No.5.
Steve’s leadership skills have also seen him serve as Club Captain in three separate seasons, 1997-1998, 1999-2000 and 2001-2002, and his influence has stretched across teams, age groups, and generations. He has been a constant presence in our club that has evolved dramatically during his tenure.
It seems that records from the early days may have been kept on parchment, but Steve is confident he has played in over 500 first team games, a milestone that places him among the club’s most enduring players. He has also achieved Top Try Scorer across 3 different decades, 1990’s, 2000’s and the 2010’s, a level of consistency that is rare in any sport, let alone one as physically unforgiving as rugby.
Steve has also collected numerous club awards over the years, each one reflecting a different facet of his contribution, leadership, performance, commitment, and character.
Steve’s departure from the role doesn’t mark an ending so much as a transition. His impact is woven into the club’s culture, in the players he’s captained, the teams he’s guided, the matches he’s influenced, and the countless hours he’s poured into keeping Cullompton RFC moving forward, he steps down with the respect of teammates, coaches, supporters, and opponents alike.
Steve’s dedication to Cullompton Rugby Club certainly won’t end here, watch this space!!!
Thank you, Steve, for everything you have done over the past 4 decades, from everyone at Cullompton Rugby Club. ❤️?
