Cumbernauld 1st XV (19), Waysiders-Drumpellier 1st XV (20)

In the presence of the Rob Flockhart, the current Vice- President and President elect of the Scottish Rugby Union, Cumbernauld 1st XV lost narrowly to a 14 man Waysiders-Drumpellier outfit by 19pts to 20pts in what was an error strewn game, However Cumbernauld did secure a crucial losing bonus point.
WD opened the scoring after only 1 minute when Cumbernauld conceded the first of many penalties and WD duly kicked the 3 points. However, after the restart WD lost their prop when he was red carded by the ref for throwing a punch. Cumbernauld failed to capitalize on this and WD, spurned on by their loss took the game to Cumbernauld. The sides were quickly equalled when the Cumbernauld Hooker was sent to the bin for 10 mins for a repeated technical offence. WD took advantage of this and after some dominant mauling scored a converted try to give then a 10 point lead after 25 minutes. 5 minutes later WD struck again when their full back waltzed through a number of mis-tackles to score a converted try, taking their tally to 17 points. From the ensuing restart Cumbernauld pushed hard into the WD 22 zone and were eventually rewarded with a try by Harkins, converted by Reid to make the half-time score 7 pts to 17 in favour of WD.
6 minutes into the second half WD extended their lead by kicking a penalty, meaning the Badgers had to score 3 times to win the game. The Badgers came close to scoring soon after when Rice was denied a try, the ref adjudging that the final pass was forward. Cumbernauld did however manage to score 2 tries, one by man of the match Harkins and Captain Reid, one converted by Reid, taking the score margin to 1 point. Cumbernauld pushed hard for the vital win and were unlucky not to advance their score but some basic handling errors, stout defending by WD coupled with some strange refereeing decisions kept them adrift and WD ran out winners by 19pts to 20.
Next Saturday sees Cumbernauld travel to the “Costa Clyde” to take on Arran in Brodick which, given other results in the league, means this is a must win for the Badgers if they are to retain their status in West Division 2.
Meet at Club on Saturday morning for a 10.30 prompt departure.
