Star's first home match of the pre-season saw them overcome a good Abbey Vale side at an eerie Islecroft. The match was played under strict covid rules with no supporters present, and supporters of both teams missed a pretty good match considering the lack of game time for both sides. The first half was pretty even with former Star manager Darren Kerr revelling in his role at the heart of the Vale defence. There was little by way of clear cut chances and it was only when current boss Ritchie Maxwell made a number of changes at half time did the Lowland League side take any kind of control. The only goal of the match came in the 65th minute when Connor Graham's corner picked out Steven Black unmarked at the back post and he comfortably powered home his header. Star had a number of chances to increase their lead but a lack of match sharpness could be used as an excuse for the lack of further goals but credit must go to Vale who were well organised and comfortable on the ball. If they continue to progress in this way then they will surely be a force to be reckoned with in the South league this season, if football ever gets started that is.
