The Star’s difficult start to the season took another turn for the worse as they were comprehensively beaten at Alloa. The fixture computer has been somewhat unkind to the Islecroft side putting us up against most of the teams expected to be in the hunt for the league title straight away and it doesn’t get any easier next week when we travel to current leaders Bonnyrigg Rose.
In this match Vinnie Parker produced a fine save to keep the home side out in the 10th minute and the Star stopper had a superb match despite conceding five goals. But for a series of first class saves, this result could have been a whole lot worse. Star themselves had a great chance in the 16th minute when Steven Degnan’s cross found Connor Graham but his effort from 12 yards was blocked by the legs of Ryan Marshall in the home goal. Midway through the first half BSC took the lead in controversial circumstances when Craig Fergusson was judged to have fouled Jamie Hamilton and even the home side said it was very soft. Tom Orr wasn’t bothered in the slightest and he made no mistake from the spot. The lead was doubled on the half hour when Robbie McNab scored from 20 yards and on the stroke of half time it was 3-0 when Orr netted from another penalty.
When Martin Grehan scored four minutes into the second half you feared for another Kelty result but thankfully it was not to be. In the 64th minute Ross Smith scored with a stunning volley and Orr had a chance for a hat trick of penalties with ten minutes left but Parker pulled off a fine stop to keep the score at five. So Star still remain pointless and goalless as we approach our fifth game of the season.
We have to realise though that this Star side is playing against a calibre of team no other Star team has ever faced at league level. However we also feel we must do better especially as confidence is continually being knocked as we go from defeat to defeat. However football is a strange game and all it may take to get us back on track is one game, one goal or even one break of the ball.
