A lop-sided August fixture list could work in Daventry Town’s favour as six of the first seven competitive matches in the 2017-18 season will take place at Communications Park.

The opening FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round tie against once-mighty Worcester City will be followed by home UCL Premier Division clashes with both Desborough Town (August 8th) and Rothwell Corinthians four days later.

A trip to UCL newcomers Leicester St.Andrews breaks the mould on August 15th before the first month’s programme ends with more possible home games against Chasetown (FA Cup), Harborough Town and Wellingborough Whitworths.

The Chasetown cup clash pencilled in for August 19th is dependent upon the Purple Army seeing off former Vanarama League giants Worcester at the initial stage. That remains a tall order!

At the end of last season Worcester were forcibly relegated three divisions to the Midland Premier League as the FA was not happy with the nomadic club’s financial arrangements. Home matches will once again be played in Bromsgrove.

Things are looking up though as Worcester City Council is reconsidering a decision not to make land available for a new football stadium within the city’s confines.

Meanwhile the glut of early-season home fixtures gives Daventry a golden opportunity both to get-off to a flying start on regaining UCL Premier status and to generate much-needed extra income through the Browns Road clubhouse.

Overall debts have been reduced already from £128,000 to £84,000 and club chairman Steve Tubb is confident that the outstanding arrears can be wiped out altogether within the next two years.

In the recent friendly match at Kilsby the Town beat newly-formed Rugby Borough by a 7-5 margin on a 3G pitch which produced some kamikaze defending by both teams. The score was 2-2 after only 12 minutes. Since then, Town have won impressively v Coventry United, Strachan Football Foundation and a youthful Mansfield Town XI.
