Daventry back on the promotion trail!

Daventry back on the promotion trail!

JIM DAVIS

Daventry Town got their promotion drive back on track with a comfortable 2 – 0 victory at strugglers Chertsey Town, but they had to wait until late in the game for a Ryan Howell goal, to settle the nerves.

A victory for Daventry was never in doubt, the second half was played almost exclusively in the Chertsey half, `The Curfews` only occasionally troubling the resolute Daventry defence, superbly marshalled by Captain Liam Dolman.

Daventry should have gone in at half time a couple of goals in front, but several goal scoring opportunities were created without any success. Town started with Tommy Berwick and Luke Keen up front, leading goal scorer Ashley Robinson missing out, due to a leg injury, sustained in the 2 -1 defeat at Ashford Town.

Tommy Berwick could have given Town the lead as early as the third minute, Josh O`Grady provided the striker with a perfect through ball, but his curling shot was turned round the post by the keeper.
Adam Confue was presented with the next opportunity, but his powerful shot was hit straight into keeper Chris Adams hands and Ross Oulton provided Luke Keen with a fine through ball, but he hit his shot well wide of the goal.

Daventry were dominating the game, but could not find a way of beating the keeper.
Tommy Berwick missed the best chance in the first half, a Howell pass found Berwick with only the keeper to beat, but the usually prolific Berwick put his shot past the far post! Daventry continued to create chances, but their finishing was letting them down! O`Grady shooting wide and Confue having a rather tame effort saved by Adams.

Ross Oulton went on a tricky run towards the Chertsey area, but further progress was prevented by a foul on the edge of the area. Tom James took the free kick, narrowly putting his effort over the crossbar as the first half ended goal less!

The Daventry players were out on the pitch, waiting for Chertsey to reappear for the second half; anxious to continue where they had left off, creating several goal scoring opportunities in the first five minutes! A foul on O`Grady presented Berwick with a free kick, but his effort was hit straight at the keeper.

Both Berwick and Keen had other chances to give Town the lead, but their efforts were either saved or their shots went wide. A change up front was to be expected, the two front strikers replaced by Scott Cross, recalled from a loan spell at Wellingborough Town and the now fit again Will Green.
Ryan Howell was also pushed further forward, hitting a shot narrowly over the bar and placing a header just past the post. Will Green almost scored with his first shot, but his strike across goal, came back off the far post!

Just as it was beginning to look as though Daventry would never score, Ryan Howell managed to find a gap in the `Curfews` defence, to hit a fine low shot to beat keeper Chris Adams. The relief amongst the travelling `Purple Army` was evident, worried expressions suddenly turned to wide smiles!

The smiles soon turned to huge grins as Town went two goals ahead, Scott Cross calmly putting a shot well beyond the reach of the keeper, to give Town an important two goal advantage. The final few minutes saw Captain Liam Dolman strike a fierce free kick towards goal, which was dropped by the keeper but was then scrambled away by anxious defenders.

On Tuesday (25th March) second placed Dunstable Town are the visitors to Communications Park. Daventry are just five points behind, `The Duns, but Daventry have four games in hand over their promotion rivals! Dunstable have a couple of excellent strikers in Lee Roache and Leon Cashman, but Daventry have the best defence in the league!

This Saturday Daventry travel to the picturesque Thame side location of Marlow, before playing three games in five days! Uxbridge next Tuesday (1st April), Egham on Thursday (3rd) before returning to Communications Park for St Ives on Saturday (5th April)
