Daventry Town reach Hillier Cup Final!

JIM DAVIS

Daventry have reached the Northamptonshire Hillier Cup Final for the second year in succession beating United Counties Premier League outfit Peterborough Northern Star in the semi –final.

Goals from Scott Cross, Ashley Robinson, Neil King and Tom Lorraine have ensured a return visit to the Sixfields Stadium, the home of Northampton Town, next April.

Daventry Town had endured heartbreak at Sixfields in last season`s final, slipping to a 3-1 defeat to Corby Town in front of a crowd of 327 spectators, former left-back Callum Burgess scoring the consolation goal for Daventry in the second half.

Daventry will play the winners of the other semi - final, still to be decided, between near neighbours Long Buckby or Cogenhoe United, the Cooks surprisingly beating Southern League Premier Division Corby Town by 4 – 0, in a much delayed quarter final fixture.

Joe Henderson was in for the absent Marcel Simpson, both he and Captain Guy Sanders put in a solid performance with Tom Lorraine showing plenty of energy and strength up front alongside Ashley Robinson.

Midfielder Neil King was Man of the Match, a real nuisance for the Peterborough defence, making several late runs into dangerous areas and scoring the third goal.

Daventry Town manager Darran Foster spoke after the game, `The lads showed great attitude out there this evening, of which only nine fit players were fielded. Both Scott Cross and Tom James were carrying injuries; unfortunately it looks like Scott has made his injury worse!

`With the change of formation, it was encouraging that all three strikers got on the score sheet. It was an excellent win, PNS are a good side, and we had to work hard to achieve our victory.

`Defensively Guy Sanders looks as though he is nearly back to his best and there were good performances from Ash Deeney and Joe Henderson. It was also good to see Liam Dolman come through the last twenty five minutes unscathed.

`We can now forget about this competition until next April when we play either Long Buckby or Cogenhoe. We shall look forward to the final, but we can now get on with winning league matches and getting back to the top of the table. `Let us hope we can take next year`s final one step further and pick the trophy up, no matter who we play it will be a very tough fixture, as cup finals always are!

This Saturday (7th December) Daventry travel to mid table St Ives Town and on Tuesday (10th December) Daventry Town host strugglers Chertsey Town at Communications Park, anything but six points from those two games would be a disappointment!
