Goals in each half from Ashley Robinson and Adam Confue, sealing their eighth consecutive home league win.
Daventry Town Manager Darran Foster thought his team should have won the game more easily, making hard work of beating Chertsey Town; `We started the game quite brightly creating several chances, Robinson, Lorraine and Oulton, all missing very good chances to put us out of sight.
If you miss chances, you are going to be in for a battle and that is exactly what Chertsey gave us, they worked tirelessly in their 4-5-1 formation and made it very difficult for us. Once we start putting these chances away, we will begin beating teams by a big score! `A very important three points, every game is a cup final at the moment, as long as we keep grinding out victories even if we are not playing well, then that is a huge plus point.
Captain Liam Dolman returned to the starting line- up, in place of Marcel Simpson who was dropped to the substitute’s bench, after arriving thirty minutes before kick – off! Daventry were the first to create chances, Ashley Robinson putting a shot past the post as he was falling and Tom Lorraine firing wide, after breaking clear on goal.
Daventry keeper Richard Morris pulled off a tremendous one handed save from Tom Betts, acrobatically turning the Chertsey strikers shot, one handed around the post for a corner. Morris was called into action minutes later, turning a sliced clearance from his own centre back Guy Sanders over the cross bar!
Ashley Robinson was presented with an excellent chance to put Town in front, but his attempted chip over the advancing keeper landed on the top of the goal! Robinson made amends five minutes later, easily heading a cross from Ryan Howells past the exposed Chertsey keeper Garry Aulsberry, to put town in front.
Ross Oulton came close to increasing the Towns lead, skipping over several tackles into the penalty area, before putting his final shot past the post. Chertsey striker Tom Betts tried to side foot his shot towards goal, but he hit the ball hard past the post. The striker also hit a poor clearance from Morris back towards goal, but the Daventry keeper had recovered in time to collect his shot.
Daventry had created several chances during the first half, but only managed to convert one; a second goal was needed to settle the nerves of the Purple Army in the second half. Chertsey winger John Flood was given a straight red after fifty five minutes, for an elbow on Ross Oulton and the match began to turn in Towns favour.
Ryan Howell had a fine shot turned over the bar by keeper Aulsbury, minutes before substitute Luke Keen provided an assist for Adam Confue to put Town two goals ahead, Keen chipping the ball over a defender for Confue to turn his shot past the keeper.
Team Manager Darran Foster also spoke about the improving injury list and the need for his players to play as a team, not as individuals!
`Our performances have dipped recently, this needs to change quickly, we appear to be playing as individuals, not as a team.
We need to regroup and get back to playing as a team unit, individuals do not win trophies, this is a team game, and teams win promotions not individuals!
`It was very pleasing for Liam Dolman to come through 90 minutes and for Josh Blake and Ollie Wilkinson to come on as substitutes, with no issues.
Luke Keen showed a piece of quality for the second goal and is chomping at the bit for a start. The squad is now back up to sixteen fit players, Scott Cross and Mykel Beckley the only ones left on the treatment table. Squad rotation is the only way we will get us through this very busy period.
Chris Murphy has informed me that he will be leaving the area with work; he has a promotion which is based in London, I would personally like to thank Chris for his contribution.
He is a quality character and footballer; he will be missed by everyone at the club. Kyle Cartwright has informed me his injury is a lot worse than he first thought and will be side-lined for at least three months!
`We now have two tricky away games at Chalfont and Hayes, both games will be very testing, we shall need to play very well to make sure we get full points. It’s quite simple, if we do not turn up we will get beat and we cannot afford to let that happen.
Daventry Town will be looking to extend their six match unbeaten league run this Saturday (14th December) when they travel to Chalfont St Peter in Buckinghamshire, then next Tuesday (17th December) Town travel to North London, taking on AFC Hayes.
