Top of the League performance!

Daventry Town are top of the Southern League Central Division, after a comfortable 5 – 0 victory over Potters Bar Town, two goals apiece from Scott Cross and Adam Confue plus a goal from Josh O`Grady, gave Daventry the three points needed to send Davent

Daventry are one point ahead of second placed Dunstable Town and two points ahead of third and fourth placed Slough Town and Rugby Town. The Purple Army have two games in hand over all four chasing clubs, with just five games to play, as Town go in search of a history making League and Cup double! The open top bus has the engine running! Centre back Marcel Simpson, injured in the victory at Leighton Town was absent, but should return for Thurdays trip to AFC Hayes.

Daventry created a couple of chances before taking the lead, Adam Confue rounding the keeper and placing the ball into an empty net after taking the ball off the feet of a Scholars defender. Josh O`Grady put Town two ahead a minute before half time, collecting the ball out on the right he cut inside and thumped a terrific shot wide of the beaten keeper Mike Underwood.

A fantastic run from Ross Oulton, returning from a two match suspension, almost provided the assist for a three goal lead, skipping past several defenders before laying the ball off to O`Grady, whose shot was unfortunately was blocked for a corner. Scholars winger Tom Laxton was sent off on the hour for a two footed foul on James Husband, much to the relief of Tayo Davies –Coker who appeared to have been the perpetrator! With the match already won, Foster made a number of substitutions, clearly thinking ahead to the three matches in five days this weekend!

Luke Keen provided the assist for Scott Cross to score the first of two in three minutes, Cross hitting a fine shot low down to the keepers left for his first and a similar goal two minutes later, leaving the Scholars keeper Underwood beaten for the fourth time. Luke Keen was unlucky not to add his name to the score sheet, having a fine shot turned round the post by Underwood, minutes later!

It was left to Adam Confue to complete the rout, a corner form substitute Ryan Howell falling at his feet on the far post, leaving Confue to side foot the ball into the net.
Striker Evandro Delgado almost provided the Scholars with a consolation goal late in the game, but his powerful shot from outside the area was superbly palmed away by Richard Morris, to record yet another clean sheet for the Daventry keeper!

On Thursday (24th April) Daventry Town travel to AFC Hayes and on Saturday (19th April) entertain Royston Town at Communications Park.
On Easter Monday (3.00 KO) Daventry travel to Latimer Park, Burton Latimer to play Kettering Town in what promises to be a huge match for both clubs. A big attendance is expected so all supporters are being advised to share transport and arrive early! Car parking will be limited!

Daventry Town are likely to play Peterborough United in July to contest the Maunsell Cup after beating Cogenhoe United in the Hillier Cup Final. Last summer Northampton Town travelled to Steel Park to play Corby Town. The annual pre-season cup has seen the Cobblers alternate with Peterborough United as to which team plays the winners of the Hillier Senior Cup, with Northampton taking them on in the odd-numbered years. Northampton last played in the Maunsell Cup final in 2011, where they lost 1-0 away to Brackley Town.
