Sitting directly under the flight path for Heathrow, the sights and sounds of passing aircraft were sometimes a distraction, from the game taking place on the field, such was the quality of the football on display at times!
Leading Daventry marksman Scott Cross was the first to hit an ambitious shot at goal, from wide left near the corner flag, he hit the ball across goal and it dipped just wide of the far post, only Scott could tell you whether it was a shot or cross.
A foul by Kyle Cartwright on the league’s leading marksman, Ryan Bird, presented Burnham with a free kick, from which Burnham centre back John Munday, hit the rebound high over the crossbar.
Burnham were awarded a penalty in the twenty fifth minute, Ryan Bird managed to get goal side of Daventry full back Marcel Simpson, who was adjudged by the referee, to have bought the striker down unfairly, Bird then got up and converted the penalty to record his nineteenth goal in eighteen matches this season.
Daventry midfielder, Adam Confue, hit a cross into the path of Ashley Robinson who narrowly failed to get a foot to the ball, and centre back Kyle Cartwright got in a very important block on Ryan Bird just as he was about to hit a shot in on the Daventry goal.
The equaliser for Daventry Town, came right on half time, a corner from Jamie Gould bounced around between several players in the penalty area before Cross managed to get his left foot on the ball, hooking it over goalkeeper Michael Watkins and into the net.
Daventry Town started the second half brightly, but it was Burnham who took the lead for the second time in the game against the run of play, Ashley Robinson gave the ball away just inside his own half, and Burnham took swift advantage, a shot from striker Lewis Driver was saved by Daventry keeper Richard Morris, only for the ball to fall into the path of Burnham striker Will Hendry, who easily beat Morris with a shot into the bottom left hand corner.
Daventry Manager Darran Foster made several substitutions in the second half, to give the Daventry attack greater support, off went a tired looking Scott Cross and on came Josh Blake, recently returned from his loan spell at Woodford United and Nat Liburd strode on for Aaron King and Danny Edmunds for Jamie Gould.
The substitutions worked, Burnham keeper Michael Watkins was soon forced into making a fine one handed save from a Josh Blake header, which went for a corner, and from the resulting corner Daventry captain Guy Sanders was able to direct a looping header, beyond the despairing reach of the Burnham keeper, for the equaliser.
Daventry had several chances to snatch victory in the final minutes, but a draw was a fair result, playing conditions did not make it easy for either team to play a passing game of football, but Daventry Town would have been happier with their away point, at promotion chasing Burnham.
On Saturday 17th November, Daventry Town are at home to Chertsey Town, Chertsey are currently in the bottom three places of the league table, having won only one game all season, Daventry should be looking to take all three points from that game, if they are to stay with the chasing pack for the promotion and play – off places.
On Tuesday 20th November, Daventry are at home again in the Red Insure League Cup v Premier League side Barwell, they are fifth in their league, with only two defeats all season, so both games should provide some entertaining football.
