Woodford keeper James Brassington, made a number of fine saves throughout the game, holding on tightly to the ball on several occasions, in the sticky wet conditions.
Brassington turned a fine effort from Adam Confue, around the post for a corner and Michael Bryan had a shot firmly held by the Woodford keeper, during the early exchanges.
Daventry were creating plenty of chances and went ahead after twenty six minutes, Jamie Gould picking his spot with a sweet curling effort high to Brassingtons right.
Woodford had chances themselves, Eddie Kostiuk weaving his way past several Daventry defenders before having his shot blocked and bouncing high over the bar for a corner.
Daventry keeper Richard Morris also turned two Woodford attempts around his post, after fine shots from Joe Power and Eddie Kostiuk, threatened a Woodford equaliser.
New Daventry Town striker Robbie Brown, in from Nuneaton town for a month, scored the second Daventry goal after sixty minutes, right winger Michael Bryan dribbled the ball to the goal line, then crossed it back to the edge of the penalty area, where Brown hit the ball first time, to send a curling shot past a despairing Brassington.
Daventry midfielder Adam Confue hit a rasping shot just wide of the right hand post, after good wing work by Scott Cross, then Ross Oulton had a shot tipped over the cross bar by the busy James Brassington. Cross also had a shot, luckily saved by the keepers feet, as Daventry began to take control of the game.
The final goal came in the seventy second minute, when Jamie Gould hit his second goal of the game, a perfect free kick placed high beyond the reach of the diving keeper.
Leighton Town are the visitors to Communications Park next Saturday 29th December, Daventry won by 3-2 at the Bell Close Ground, in August with goals from Jamie Gould, Neil King and Matt Gearing securing the points.
Daventry will be looking to end 2012 on a high note, by completing the double over the Bedfordshire club.
The first two games of the New Year will be a real test for the ambitious Northamptonshire club, a trip on New Year’s Day across the border into Warwickshire, at fourth placed Rugby Town and a home tie against high flying Royston Town, at Communications Park on January 5th 2013.
Daventry Town easily beat Rugby Town in the corresponding fixture, at Communications Park in August, by 4-1 in front of a crowd of 171 spectators, with goals from the King Brothers Neil and Aaron, Mykel Beckley and an unfortunate Goodyer own goal! I would expect this local derby, to be a much closer and more eagerly fought encounter, by two of the best teams in this division.
Royston Town have already beaten Daventry Town this season, by 2-1 in September, a Nat Liburd penalty, being the only consolation for Daventry Town, from a game in which, they should have returned from Hertfordshire, with all three points.
Royston have slipped a little in recent weeks, winning just one game in their last five fixtures, losing to Slough Town, Biggleswade Town, Rugby Town and a drawn game at Ashford Town.
If Daventry Town are to realise their target of a play – off place this season, these two matches could go a long way to helping them achieve those ambitions, if they could take all six points off two of their nearest rivals!
